Five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper Sr. continued his recent beef with LeBron James by calling the superstar overrated. Harper and James exchanged some insults this season after Ron commented on LeBron’s parenting skills during All-Star Weekend. The Shooting Stars exhibition featured Harper playing with his sons and making a comment that he doesn’t control his children like James does.
LeBron fired back an insult towards Harper a couple of weeks ago. Harper had the following response about why he views James as overrated:
“You can talk about LeBron James and his longevity. He leads the league in this and that (all time). Can you tell me what stat did LeBron James ever lead the NBA in a (single) season? He led the league in scoring one time.
LeBron is a longevity guy. He’s like a Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]. They had longevity. When we played the ball game in our day, we didn’t play for longevity ’cause we knew you was gonna have an eight-to-10-year career. You’re going 82 games hard. If we could take off days, which we didn’t, we could probably play 18 years to 20.”
Harper believes that James’ longevity shouldn’t outweigh players who had shorter runs but dominated more by leading the league in various statistics. Bad blood clearly now exists between the two after both players went out of their way to insult the other over the past month.
Does Ron Harper Have A Fair Point?
An argument can be made against players who compiled stats with longer careers not being better than the legends they’ve passed. However, LeBron doesn’t make sense to get that criticism since he was considered the best player in the league for over a decade.
Harper would be better off making this point about Kevin Durant passing Michael Jordan on the scoring list or DeMar DeRozan nearing Shaquille O’Neal’s point total. James is the last player who should be called out for compiling stats since he was always outstanding on the court.
Most pundits viewed LeBron as an outstanding performer influencing his team from his rookie season to his current role over two decades later. Harper is clearly offering a response to James making fun of him on the Mind the Game podcast.
Why Ron Harper Hates LeBron James
Harper’s initial comment felt a bit out of place when giving an opinion on another player’s parenting skills. The comment felt personal, but it showed that not all players respect LeBron for influencing the Los Angeles Lakers to draft his son Bronny James.
LeBron fired back by saying he’ll say Ron in person and made an insulting comment about the veteran. However, James made sure to show respect to his son Dylan Harper and didn’t hold Ron’s words against him.
Ron still felt compelled to reply here and say that LeBron is overrated for utilizing longevity to inflate his stats and legacy. Regardless, James comes out looking better since he’s miles above Harper historically and was just replying about someone making unfair comments about his parenting.
