The New York Knicks’ championship celebration has given way to another behind-the-scenes departure.
Carson Shanks, who spent three seasons working across the Knicks’ video, analytics and player-development departments, will not return next season, according to the New York Post. His contract expired this offseason.
Shanks’ exit comes days after senior vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas left the organization following four seasons. Both men departed after their contracts expired, and there has been no indication that the moves were connected.
Still, the timing makes Shanks the second member of the organization to leave since the Knicks captured their first NBA championship in 53 years.
“Three years of the Mecca, three years of the City, three years of being a New York Knick,” Shanks wrote in an Instagram farewell, calling the experience one that produced memories and relationships that would remain with him.
Carson Shanks Filled Several Roles for Knicks
Shanks’ most recent title was assistant director of video, analytics and player development, a position that placed him at the intersection of game preparation and on-court instruction.
The 7-footer frequently worked with the Knicks’ big men, especially Ariel Hukporti — who left in free agency to join the Philadelphia 76ers — during pregame warmups. His duties were removed from the public-facing responsibilities of head coach Mike Brown and his front-bench assistants, but they were part of the daily infrastructure required to sustain a championship team.
Shanks joined the Knicks in 2023 after beginning his coaching career at Minnesota Duluth, where he worked extensively with post players. Before coaching, he played at North Dakota and Loyola Chicago, appearing with Loyola during its run to the 2018 Final Four.

He later signed with Gzira Athletica in Malta before moving into video work and coaching.
That background gave Shanks an uncommon profile inside the Knicks’ operation: a former Division I center with professional playing experience who could also contribute to video breakdowns, statistical analysis and individual development.
His departure does not appear likely to disrupt Brown’s primary coaching group. The Post reported that the Knicks’ front-of-bench assistants are expected to return, although additional movement among the organization’s support staff remains possible.
Gersson Rosas’ Exit Carried Greater Front-Office Impact
Rosas’ departure came from a different level of the organization.
The former Minnesota Timberwolves president was among team president Leon Rose’s senior advisers and played a role in trade negotiations and roster construction. He was notably involved in the Knicks’ acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns, whom Rosas had previously worked with in Minnesota.
Rosas left on good terms while seeking an opportunity to expand his role elsewhere.
“Mission accomplished,” Rosas wrote in his own farewell message. “On to the next chapter.”
The consecutive departures do not necessarily signal instability. Championship organizations routinely lose executives and developmental staffers whose work attracts interest around the league.
They nevertheless create openings that Rose must fill while the Knicks defend their title. Rosas helped shape the roster. Shanks helped support the players charged with maximizing it.
Shanks leaves New York with a championship ring and memories of a parade few Knicks employees have experienced. The Knicks, meanwhile, enter their title defense having lost another contributor whose influence was largely invisible until his work was finished.
