Victor Wembanyama is enjoying a coming-out party this postseason, establishing himself as the future face of the National Basketball Association.

After leading the San Antonio Spurs to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2014, Wembanyama could be rewarded with a massive $300 million extension this summer.

According to Spotrac insider Michael Ginnitti, the Spurs are expected to offer the reigning Defensive Player of the Year a massive extension.

The Spurs are eligible to sign Victor Wembanyama to a maximum rookie extension this summer that projects to start at five years, $251M with ‘super-max’ language that can increase the deal to as much as $301M,” he wrote on X.

ESPN insider Bobby Marks reported that the Spurs superstar becomes eligible to sign a massive five-year rookie extension on July 6. The day after the NBA Finals conclude. Barring a shocking development, the Spurs are expected to reward the All-Star this summer.

If Wembanyama earns an All-NBA selection, wins MVP, or captures Defensive Player of the Year during the 2026-27 season, his extension would automatically escalate from 25% of the salary cap to 30%, adding roughly $50 million to the contract.

Wemby has led the league in blocks in each of his three seasons. Therefore, he stands a good chance to repeat as Defensive Player of the Year next season. He will likely be in the running for MVP as well.

So, there is a $50 million incentive for the Spurs to extend him this summer instead of waiting it out.

Without incentives, the projected five-year, $251 million extension would break down approximately as follows:

2027-28: $43.3 million

2028-29: $46.8 million

2029-30: $50.6 million

2030-31: $54.7 million

2031-32: $59.1 million

Total: $251 million

If Wemby triggers the Rose Rule escalator through MVP, DPOY, or All-NBA honors, the contract would increase to roughly:

2027-28: $51.9 million

2028-29: $56.1 million

2029-30: $60.6 million

2030-31: $65.5 million

2031-32: $70.9 million

Total: $301 million

San Antonio was likely going to extend the former No. 1 pick regardless. After Wembanayama’s excellent Western Conference Finals run, it feels like a forgone conclusion.

Wembanyama won the Magic Johnson Trophy on Saturday as the Most Valuable Player of the Western Conference finals.

The Frenchman averaged 27.3 points, 10.9 boards, 3.1 assists, 2.7 blocks, and 1.4 steals across the seven-game series.

The 22-year-old joins Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as the only winners of the award since its introduction in 2022.

After receiving the award, Wemby expressed that he still isn’t satisfied.

“We want four more,” he said, alluding to winning the Finals. “We are not done!”
