The Arizona Cardinals will take on the Dallas Cowboys for their third preseason game. The Cardinals are 1-1 in the preseason, losing to the Carolina Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game and defeating the Las Vegas Raiders in Preseason Week 1.

At quarterback, it will be the Gardner Minshew II and Kedon Slovis show. Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur ruled out both starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett and rookie Carson Beck, who is dealing with a rib injury. He did not clarify how many of the starters on offense could sit from this game.

Cardinals vs. Cowboys: What to Watch For

With the Cardinals resting some of their starters, this will be another game where the back half of the roster sees more action. Here are the most important things to watch for.

Gardner Minshew’s Ability to Command the Offense

Minshew had a very good first preseason game against the Raiders. The eighth-year veteran completed 14 of 16 passes for 101 yards and two touchdown passes. On three drives, he led the offense to two touchdowns and a field goal.

It will be important for Minshew to have just as good a second game. While it may not impact his standing on the depth chart, it would give the coaching staff more confidence. He would be the first man off the bench if something happened to Jacoby Brissett.

Also, with Carson Beck not playing, that affords an opportunity for the 30-year-old quarterback to create more separation over the rookie for the backup spot.

Opportunity for Backup Running Backs to Shine

The Cardinals are banged up at the running back position. Jeremiyah Love is out for the remainder of the preseason. Trey Benson and James Conner are nowhere close to playing in a game of any kind. Only offseason signing Tyler Allgeier has a clear role in this offense right now, and he might not play in this game.

That affords an opportunity for some of the depth options to get a turn. Players such as Bam Knight and Corey Kiner come to mind. Knight offers the Cardinals some special teams viability, which is important for a team’s fourth running back.

Kiner has had a couple of nice preseason showings between the Hall of Fame game and the second half of the Raiders game. If there is a situation where Arizona needs to put Love, Benson, or Conner on injured reserve to begin the season, that could open up an opportunity for the second-year back to make the roster.

Otherwise, he makes a great fit for the Cardinals’ practice squad.

Inside Linebacker Competition Between Jack Gibbens and Cody Simon

Mack Wilson Sr. is one of the Cardinals’ starting inside linebackers. The other spot could come down to how well former Patriot Jack Gibbens plays vs. 2025 fourth-rounder Cody Simon. If Wilson does not suit up for this game, both Gibbens and Simon should see some run early in this game.
