The Atlanta Falcons entered the 2025 NFL season with the spotlight on quarterback Michael Penix and the offense.
Instead, it’s the defense that deserves plenty of credit for why the Falcons have found success so far.
Through two weeks, the defense has carried the load, delivering pressure, turnovers and toughness.
Their ability to stand out so far has a former NFL cornerback-turned-analyst reeling with praise.
On the Mina Kimes podcast, ex-NFL player Dominque Foxworth shared his thoughts on the Falcons‘ defensive rise.
He admitted he didn’t think the Falcons‘ defense would look good this early.
But the impact of their rookies, pressure ability and scheme has impressed him thus far.
Falcons Defense Turning Heads
As Dominque Foxworth highlighted, the Falcons have found early success on defense.
A big part of that is due to the defensive rookies.
“All the rookies that they have that are playing incredibly well. Pearce and Walker, like their impact on the game is noticeable,” said Foxworth.
The Falcons invested heavily in their pass-rush, having selected two edge rushers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Linebacker Jalon Walker was selected 15th overall, and edge-rusher James Pearce Jr selected 26th overall.
Both Walker and Pearce recorded a sack against the Vikings this past Sunday.
Their mark is starting to be left on opposing offenses.
Foxworth also made note of the redzone struggles over the Falcons‘ first two games, and calls out that the reason the Falcons sit at 1-1 is because of their defense.
Additionally, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has found success with his newly acquired defense.
Ulbrich was brought in this past offseason to install a new regime, energy and aggressive scheme that is starting to stick with the players.
Atlanta’s front office also deserves credit.
GM Terry Fontenot knew his team needed an injection of talent into the defense, most notably their pass-rushing ability.
His choice to double-dip back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is looking like the right call so far.
The blend of youth and coaching has started to form a foundation for the Falcons‘ defense. One that could be the reason why the Falcons find success this season.
Atlanta Looking To Maintain Success
Through two weeks, the Falcons‘ defense has gone from the basement to the penthouse floor.
Their ability to rush the passer is a big reason why they sit at 1-1 and are favoured for their upcoming matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
With a win against the Panthers, the Falcons would sit at 2-1 and be toe to toe with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Foxworth’s comments highlight a shift in perception.
This isn’t just a stopgap defense as many thought it would be. It is a group that can have continued success as the season continues.
Falcons fans have many reasons to feel optimistic.
The season is long, but the signs are encouraging.
If Jalon Walker, James Pearce and other standout players like Kaden Ellis and Jessie Bates continue having success, the Falcons could have a budding defense on their hands.
Atlanta’s defense has risen to the occasion, and if Penix and company can follow suit on offense, the Falcons may find themselves in a position of strength faster than expected.
