The Atlanta Falcons stunned the NFL by drafting Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall in 2024, just weeks after signing veteran QB Kirk Cousins to a massive 4 year, $180 million deal.

Now a year later, Penix is set to start for the Falcons as a 25 year old second year pro with only three NFL starts under his belt. The question on every Falcons fan’s mind is: How good can he really be?

At Washington, Penix was electric. He led college football with 4,903 passing yards and 36 touchdowns in 2023, won the Maxwell Award, and finished his career with nearly 14,000 passing yards.

Scouts raved about his arm, calling him the “best pure thrower in the 2024 class”, but his medical file told another story: two ACL tears and two shoulder injuries.

But the Falcons bet that his talent outweighed the risk. Head coach Raheem Morris praised him saying “You’re talking about a guy who is a pocket passer…who can do all the things you want him to do, throw the ball all over the field.”

Initially, the plan was simple: let Cousins start while Penix learned. That timeline accelerated after Cousins’ injury. By December, Morris admitted, “The plan came a little bit sooner, but the kid was ready.”

Penix’s first NFL start came in Week 16 against the Giants. The result was a 34-7 win in which he looked composed and decisive, completing 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards. He didn’t throw a touchdown, but ran the offense cleanly, and his lone interception came on a tipped ball.

His overall rookie line (775 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions in 3 games) was modest, but the tape was better than the box score. He was perfect on intermediate throws between the numbers (11 for 11, 143 yards), answering a big pre-draft concern.

More importantly, the Falcons offense took off with him. Over the final three games, Atlanta averaged 32 points per game, a jump fueled by Penix’s decisiveness and accuracy.

Outlook and Prediction

So, how good is Michael Penix actually? The truth is… We don’t know yet.

His resume screams franchise quarterback, his rookie tape showed potential and arm talent, and he inherits one of the best offensive cores in the NFC. But until he survives the grind of a full season and proves he can stay healthy, questions will remain.

What he does have is help. Bijan Robinson gives him a dynamic playmaker in the backfield, Drake London has developed into a true No. 1 receiver, and Kyle Pitts still has the upside to be one of the league’s most dangerous tight ends.

Add in a steady veteran wideout in Darnell Mooney plus a strong offensive line anchored by Chris Lindstrom and Jake Matthews, and Penix is stepping into a situation most young quarterbacks can only dream of.

The NFC South is no pushover. Tampa Bay and Carolina both look improved, but Atlanta has the talent to contend if Penix keeps climbing. In the best case scenario, Penix stays healthy, maximizes his weapons, and pushes Atlanta to a division title and its first playoff win since 2017.

But for now, cautious optimism is the right stance. Atlanta has surrounded Penix with stars at every level, and the foundation is in place for him to succeed immediately. The 2025 season will reveal whether Michael Penix Jr. is actually the quarterback capable of finally leading the Falcons back into relevance.
