The Atlanta Falcons entered the 2025 season with high expectations. Much of that optimism centered on second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., but there was also a growing belief that the defense could become a difference maker after robust changes in the offseason.

Penix, who saw the unit daily in training camp, was among the first to sound the alarm on how much the group had improved under new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich and the wave of new talent added this offseason.

“This is different. I feel like we’re going to have a really good year on that side of the ball,” Penix told Falcons reporter Will McFadden.

On September 14, the Falcons gave everyone a glimpse of what Penix had seen, dominating the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football.

New Falcons Defense Erupts Against Vikings

Coming off a Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta desperately needed a win. What unfolded was a defensive explosion.

The game remained a slugfest through the first half, with five field goals culminating to a 9-6 Falcons lead at the break. The only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter, when Tyler Allgeier powered into the end zone from five yards out to seal a 22-6 victory.

The bigger story, though, was Atlanta’s defense. Ulbrich’s unit suffocated the Vikings, holding them to 198 total yards and just 10 first downs while forcing four turnovers and racking up six sacks.

Second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy struggled behind an offensive line that lost two starters, one mid-game, and the Falcons’ defense feasted. Rookie first-round picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. combined for 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits. In the secondary, fellow rookies Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman Jr. each picked off McCarthy, putting an exclamation point on the night.

It wasn’t just the newcomers. Second-year linemen Brandon Dorlus and Ruke Orhorhoro added to the sack total, while veteran free agent Leonard Floyd provided one of his own.

Through two weeks, Atlanta has transformed into one of the league’s best defenses, ranking second in total defense, second in pass defense, ninth in rush defense, and second in scoring defense.

Raheem Morris Trusts His Youthful Falcons Defense

Head coach Raheem Morris has made it a priority to fix Atlanta’s long-maligned defense since his arrival. Once notorious for a nonexistent pass rush, the Falcons have invested heavily in youth, spending nine of their last 13 draft picks on defenders.

“It’s what we talked about all throughout the offseason, those guys having big roles for us whether it was rushing, whether it was ball hawking for us. Both of those things were on display today,” Morris said, according to Tori McElhaney. “I can’t say enough about those young guys. I can’t say enough about what they’ve done. They’re learning how to play football every single day. They are learning how to live this NFL life every single day and they’re loving it and they’re embracing it.”

With Penix and the offense still working out the kinks, the Falcons’ defense may be the true key to keeping Atlanta in playoff contention this season.
