Bills Could Part Ways With Former 1st-Round QB During Training Camp

The Buffalo Bills have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Josh Allen, but he has yet to reach the Super Bowl.

The biggest knock on Allen’s career so far is his inability to get to the big game. Almost every postseason, Allen runs into Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs and can’t find a way to get past them.

Quarterback is the most crucial position on an NFL roster, and it’s not just the starting quarterback that fans should be worried about.

In 2017, the Philadelphia Eagles lost their starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, for the season when he suffered a knee injury in early December.

Many fans around the NFL thought the Eagles’ season was over when Wentz went down, but the exact opposite happened.

Backup Quarterbacks Are Important In The NFL

Philadelphia’s backup quarterback Nick Foles stepped up as the starter, bringing the Eagles to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles would take down the New England Patriots to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

If Philadelphia didn’t have a great backup in Foles, then the team would’ve never won the Super Bowl. Many NFL teams have learned from the Eagles’ success in their pursuit of a reliable backup.

NFL coaches and front office members understand that the quarterback drives the team, and if something were to happen to their starter, they know it could cause the team to collapse if a suitable backup doesn’t step in.

The Bills are in a great position to reach the Super Bowl this season with Allen, but there is a chance Allen could miss some games.

The 29-year-old quarterback likes to take hits, which could cause him to miss some time.

This offseason, the Bills signed quarterback Mike White to a two-year, $2.3 million deal, in addition to backup Mitch Trubisky, who signed with the team last offseason.

The Bills Could Cut Mitch Trubisky Before The Season

Since the Bills added White this offseason, there is a chance Buffalo may not keep three quarterbacks on the roster. If the Bills don’t keep three quarterbacks, Trubisky could be the odd man out.

Randy Gurzi from Buffalo Bills On SI thinks Trubisky could be on the chopping block heading into training camp.

“Mitchell Trubisky never lived up to his draft status, but he’s been seen as a decent backup since leaving Chicago. He spent the 2021 seasons with Buffalo, before heading to Pittsburgh for two years. He was back with the Bills in 2024 and appeared in nine games,” Gurzi wrote. “He’s currently QB2 behind Josh Allen, but there’s a chance Mike White could surpass him. Even if it’s close, Buffalo might prefer White’s $1.195 million cap hit to Trubisky’s $3.25 million. That’s why the pressure will be on Trubisky during camp.”

Trubisky was a first-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2017 and never lived up to the hype.

In eight seasons, Trubisky has played for the Bears, Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers and could be looking at a fourth NFL team this fall.
