The NFL’s legal tampering period began on Monday, allowing teams to start negotiating deals with free agents. However, they are not permitted to officially sign players until the new league year starts on Wednesday, and a former Buffalo Bills player looks to be on the move.
Mitchell Trubisky Has Agreed to a Deal With the Tennessee Titans
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Bills backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Mitchell Trubisky in a deal done by his agents at Excel football,” Garafolo wrote Monday on X.
Trubisky spent the last two seasons as a backup to Josh Allen with the Bills. He initially joined the team in 2021 after being released by the Chicago Bears, then left Buffalo in 2022 to spend two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He returned to the Bills in 2024.
The 31-year-old quarterback hasn’t seen much action with the Bills over the past few seasons, not starting a single game and making just 13 appearances. During that time, he threw for 492 yards and six touchdowns.
The Bears selected Trubisky with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he had a solid start to his career, even earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2018 and leading Chicago to the playoffs. However, he struggled in 2019 and started only nine games in 2020 before the Bears decided to part ways with him at the end of the season.
The Titans Can Have a Nice Role For Trubisky
Trubisky is unlikely to get a chance to start with the Titans, especially with Cam Ward entering his second season after being the No. 1 overall pick in 2025. However, he could serve as a valuable mentor to him.
Many young quarterbacks appreciate having a veteran around who has experience as both a starter and a backup in the NFL. With Trubisky entering his 10th season and having done both, he could play a valuable role for Ward and the Titans.
Another point to consider is that Trubisky will reunite with former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who worked with Trubisky in Buffalo in 2021 before leaving to take the head coaching job with the New York Giants and is now the Titans’ offensive coordinator.
The Titans appear to be in good shape with Trubisky stepping in as a backup for Ward. Having a seasoned player like Trubisky may be just what Ward needs to unlock his potential during training camp.
Since the Bills will be facing the AFC West next season and the Titans didn’t finish atop their division last year, it’s unlikely the Bills will see Trubisky unless they meet in the playoffs. However, that seems far-fetched since Tennessee likely won’t be a playoff contender for a few years.
With Trubisky seemingly set to join the Titans, it’s now time for the Bills to seek out a new backup quarterback to support Allen.
