Coach Sean McDermott said Monday that Allen and the starters will not suit up for Saturday's preseason finale against the Panthers, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports. Allen also sat out last weekend's 9-3 exhibition win over the Steelers, though McDermott initially said the plan for that game was for starters to play a quarter and a half. Now, McDermott says plans have changed due to team-wide injury considerations. Allen remains at 100 percent form and has avoided injuries throughout training camp, but wide receiver Curtis Samuel (turf toe) is considered week-to-week, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (neck) could miss multiple weeks, so it makes sense for Buffalo to prioritize health at this stage.

Won't play in preseason finale
Sits Saturday
Allen did not participate in Saturday's 9-3 preseason win over the Steelers. Allen was set to play well into the second quarter along with the entire starting offense. While most of the unit did take the field, Allen remained on the sideline in a ball cap with no pads. No official reason was given, but Buffalo likely pivoted its plans due to wet field conditions after rain came through Pittsburgh just before kickoff. As one of the most proven quarterbacks in the league, Allen doesn't necessarily need to appear in preseason action, though he does have a remade receiving corps. That could mean that he plays at least a few possessions in the team's final preseason contest next Saturday against Carolina.
To play a quarter and a half
The Bills plan to play Allen and the starting offense for roughly a quarter and a half during Saturday's preseason matchup against the Steelers, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. Allen played the first quarter of last week's exhibition matchup against the Bears, in which he completed two of three passes for 22 yards and rushed once for seven yards. The star quarterback looks set for a slight uptick in on-field reps Saturday, and that could increase further during Buffalo's preseason finale against the Panthers on Aug. 24. Allen is working to build chemistry with a revamped wide receiver corps headlined by rookie second-rounder Keon Coleman, incumbent Khalil Shakir, and Curtis Samuel.
Plays first quarter vs. Bears
Allen completed two of three passes for 22 yards and rushed once for seven yards in Saturday's 33-6 preseason loss to the Bears. Allen played the first quarter, which consisted of one full drive and part of another possession for Buffalo's offense. His completions went to Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel, perhaps foreshadowing which wide receivers Allen will be relying on most following the offseason departure of Stefon Diggs. Rookie second-round pick Keon Coleman also mixed in with the first-team offense. Allen will look to keep building chemistry with Buffalo's new-look wide receiver room in next Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers.
Scheduled to play Saturday
Allen and other starters are scheduled to play for about a quarter in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. It'll be Allen's first chance in game setting to connect with new wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Keon Coleman, who join familiar faces Khalil Shakir and TE Dalton Kincaid as the probable top pass catchers under offensive coordinator Joe Brady. The Bills shifted toward more focus on the running game after Brady took over last November, but it worked out more than fine for Allen in fantasy because he got even more carries near the goal line than usual and scored eight rushing TDs in a five-game stretch Weeks 12-17. Combining his passing and rushing scores, Allen finished with 42-45 TDs each of the past four regular seasons.
Tweaking throwing motion
Allen is working on improving his throwing motion this offseason, ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg reports. Allen said the changes have felt really good at times and not so good at others. He injured his right shoulder Week 6 last season but still managed to play every game for a fifth straight year, and he confirmed in late January that he wouldn't need surgery. Some of what he's working on this offseason is returning to his pre-injury mechanics after the shoulder discomfort led to a lower, wider motion last year. The other big change will be his receiving corps, with Khalil Shakir the only WR on the roster that's ever caught a pass from Allen. The Bills parted ways with Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis this offseason and brought in Curtis Samuel, second-round pick Keon Coleman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Chase Claypool and Mack Hollins. On the other hand, Allen and offensive coordinator Joe Brady will have continuity at running back (James Cook, Ty Johnson), tight end (Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox) and on the offensive line (four of five starters returning).
Good to go Sunday
Allen was listed as a non-participant Wednesday but returned to a full practice Thursday, and with another uncapped session under his belt to end the week, the QB's Week 9 availability has been confirmed to the relief of fantasy managers, given the Bills' 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday. In the team's Week 8 win over the Buccaneers, Allen completed 31 of 40 passes for 324 yards with two TDs and one interception while adding seven carries for 41 yards and a rushing score. Through eight games overall, Allen has thrown for 2,165 yards (fifth in the league) and compiled a 17:8 TD:INT.
