After a hectic 41-40 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, the Buffalo Bills cruised to a much less suspenseful 30-10 win over the New York Jets in Week 2. The game wasn’t without its drama, though, as superstar quarterback Josh Allen was briefly forced out of the game with a nose injury, forcing veteran backup Mitch Trubisky into the action.
Trubisky wasn’t on the field for very long, but he managed to hold down the fort for Allen during his absence from the game. After the win, both Allen and head coach Sean McDermott took a second to praise Trubisky for being ready to get thrown into the action, as he helped Buffalo put some distance between itself and New York early in the game.

Late in the first quarter, Allen tried to escape pressure in the pocket by tucking the ball and running, but Jowon Briggs stopped him for no gain. Allen immediately got up and ran off the field, as his nose was gushing blood. That forced Trubisky into action, with Allen seemingly dealing with a broken nose.
The situation Trubisky found himself in was a tough one, as Buffalo was facing 3rd & 7. Despite it being his first play of the game, Trubisky found Joshua Palmer for a 32-yard gain, converting the first down and putting the Bills in Jets territory. Considering the circumstances, it was an awe-inspiring play from Trubisky.
After handing the ball off to Ty Johnson on the next play, the first quarter ended, and Allen ended up returning to the field. Still, Trubisky’s big play did not go unnoticed, with both McDermott and Allen shouting him out after the game for being able to come in and immediately deliver for Buffalo under center.
“Mitch came in there, kind of like a little shift change in hockey or something … I think it was a third down play … and (he) throws a seed in there, throws a dime. That’s hard to do with no warmup, so credit Mitch for being ready,” McDermott said after the game.
“It’s tough because you should go down there to give Mitch a chance to kind of catch his bearings to be able to come out there,” Allen added. “For him to come off the bench like that, no warmup, no nothing, to be ready, I think that’s a true embodiment of the character and the man that he is. Coming in there and making a play on third down for us, that was a huge drive, it was a huge play. So shout out Mitch.”
Josh Allen, Bills Turn Attention to Short Week

While Trubisky proved he can step up in a pinch if needed, there’s no doubt the Bills were thrilled to see Allen back on the field shortly after he suffered this injury. He wasn’t exactly at his best throughout the rest of the game, but with the Jets offense struggling on the other side of the ball, he didn’t have to do much in order for Buffalo to pick up the win.
This victory is surely sweet, but the Bills will have to quickly turn their attention to Week 3, as they will be playing on a short week on Thursday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. After earning a win over a division rival in Week 2, Buffalo will look to make two wins in two tries against AFC East opponents when it takes the field next.
