One key piece of the Buffalo Bills puzzle is finally getting respect, and it's about time, because he deserves it.

The Buffalo Bills are coming up on a big year for the team, and fingers are crossed everywhere in upstate New York that this team can finally make it to the big game and take home a win. With MVP-winning quarterback Josh Allen at the helm, there’s no reason why this team can’t flourish when the 2025-26 season kicks in.

The Bills are almost to the start of the preseason, and their regular season starts in less than two months. While there’s a lot of focus on Allen and what he will bring to the team this season, let’s not forget about the stellar coaching staff for the Bills.

Now, ESPN has released its tally of the best coaching staffs in the NFL. In the feature, Ben Solak breaks down all of the NFL team’s staffs and ranks them from best to worst. So, where do the Buffalo Bills fall?

Buffalo Bills Coaching Staff Gets Respect

While there’s lots of talk about the best players in the NFL leading up to the 2025-26 season, and rightly so, sometimes, it’s easy to overlook that there are other factors to a team’s success. One of the biggest measures of how well a team is going to do during the season, for any sport, is their coaching staff. From the head coach down to the coordinators and their staff, having a solid coaching staff is so critical to making sure a team thrives.

Solak ranks the Bills’ coaching staff, including head coach Sean McDermott, the No. 7 best staff in the NFL. That’s great, and we’ll take it. They could have been higher, but it’s still a good showing. He’s kind of the unsung hero of the staff, because the players usually get the attention.

“There is no doubt Buffalo is well coached. Its defense always impresses for its communication and cohesiveness — few teams run a Cover 2 more cleanly than McDermott’s Bills, and that has been the case for years now,” Solak notes in the feature. “The offense pivoted to a run-heavy approach with great success last season, in large part from the work of line coach Aaron Kromer (the stars on that Bills’ O-line are all homegrown) and coordinator Joe Brady, who unlocked an improved version of Josh Allen that was less turnover prone.”

So, why were the Bills higher? In the piece, Solak states that “it’s hard to put the Bills much lower than this. But it’s also tough to put them much higher. McDermott has had eight seasons to figure out a solution to Andy Reid and Mahomes, but the defense continues to underwhelm in postseason play. End-of-game clock management and go-or-kick decisions have also played an infamous part in a few crushing Bills losses of the past five years.”

PFF Names the Top NFL Coaches for 2025-26

PFF has also released their tally of the top 10 best NFL head coaches. He doesn’t have the Bills’ Sean McDermott on here. He picks Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid at No. 1.

“Like Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots teams before them, the Kansas City Chiefs are the masters of situational football,” Dalton Wasserman says in the piece, published on June 24. That hurts.
