The Chicago Bears have acquired another veteran pass rusher for their injury-hampered defensive line ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears are trading a sixth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for veteran defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round selection. The exchange is essentially a late-round pick swap that gives Chicago more pass-rushing depth after the loss of veteran starter Dayo Odeyingbo.
“Another trade: Browns sending DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a sixth-round pick, per sources,” Schefter reported Tuesday afternoon on X. “Chicago lost DE Dayo Odeyingbo to a season-ending Achilles injury on Sunday, and now trade for a potential replacement two days later.”
Tryon-Shoyinka, a 2021 first-round pick, made 45 starts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over his first four NFL seasons, recording 147 tackles, 15 sacks and eight quarterback hits. He has not seen much action in 2025 since signing his one-year, $4.75 million deal with the Browns, though, playing just 31 defensive snaps in their first eight games.
The Bears will now have more depth at defensive end after losing a key player in each of the past two weeks. Chicago placed second-round rookie defensive end Shemar Turner on injured reserve last week with a torn ACL that he sustained in Week 8’s loss, while Odeyingbo will expectedly join him after his season-ending Achilles injury on Sunday.
The Bears (5-3) will next face the New York Giants (2-7) for a 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is Likely Depth, Not a New Starter
Fans who got their hopes up about the Bears swinging a trade for the likes of Kayvon Thibodeaux or Trey Hendrickson are likely disappointed with the team’s acquisition of Tryon-Shoyinka, who has zero sacks and just nine tackles in his limited 2025 snaps.
In terms of adding depth at a value, though, the Bears might have made a savvy move.
Tryon-Shoyinka did not find a proper role for the Browns defense in the first half of the 2025 season, slotting in behind not only starters Myles Garrett and Isaiah McGuire but also backups Alex Wright and Cameron Thomas. According to Pro Football Focus, he has generated three pressures, two hurries and one QB hit on just 14 total pass-rushing snaps, though, earning a 29.2% pass-rush win rate that ranks among the league’s best.
The Bears won’t likely find Tryon-Shoyinka compelling enough to fit into their starting lineup in Odeyingbo’s place, but they could have a productive No. 3 pass rusher on their hands if they strike a good rotational balance with him and second-year Austin Booker, who recorded a strip sack in his 2025 season debut for the Bears in Week 9’s victory.
Don’t forget that Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has experience with Tryon-Shoyinka. While he has not coached him directly, he had the opportunity to watch him twice a season when he matched up against him in their previous NFC South battles.
Perhaps Allen has some ideas for how to get more out of Tryon-Shoyinka.
Will Bears Make More Deals Before Trade Deadline?
The Bears have now added an edge rusher who will provide more depth to their roster before the NFL trade deadline. But with injuries aplenty and a 5-3 record for the Bears, could general manager Ryan Poles swing another deal done before 4 p.m. ET arrives?
The Bears are unlikely to trade away any of their own players. Veteran wide receiver DJ Moore has been mentioned in the fantasy scenarios of NFL analysts, but the Bears have expressed no interest in trading away the most experienced pass catcher on their roster. Benched left tackle Braxton Jones could generate some interest, but he is still on IR.
Even after acquiring Tryon-Shoyinka, though, the Bears could make a bigger play to improve their defensive trenches. Thibodeaux, a former top-10 draft pick, is rumored to be on the trade block and would give the Bears an impact playmaker still in his prime.
Meanwhile, the New York Jets — who dealt away All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner in a blockbuster on Tuesday — could ship off former first-round pick Jermaine Johnson II. According to beat writer Connor Hughes, the Jets have an offer on the table for him that includes a second-round selection, but it is unknown which team made the offer.
The trade deadline will pass at 4 p.m. ET today.
