The Chicago Bears have a lot to look forward to under the general manager Ryan Poles/head coach Ben Johnson regime, both this season and beyond, but Kyler Gordon’s future doesn’t currently fall under that category — and it may never again.
Poles spoke with reporters on Tuesday, September 1 and gave both a candid and disconcerting update on Gordon’s health.
“Anytime you have an injury and you’re coming back from something, there’s discomfort you have to push through. And that’s what it comes down to,” Poles said. “So we haven’t been able to get over that hump and we’re not progressing as fast as we’d like. That’s really all I have to say about that.”
In response to a question about whether Gordon will ever play again for the Bears, who signed him to a three-year extension worth $40 million that begins this season, Poles was non-committal.
“I don’t know,” Poles said. “I would hope so.”
Gordon will begin this season on the physically unable to perform [PUP] list, which means he will miss at least the first four games of the campaign.

Poles’ elaboration on Gordon’s injury and his rehabilitation process lines up with a report from Matt Spiegel on August 21 during an appearance with Fox 32 Chicago.
“I had some of this info weeks ago, and now it’s become a little more obvious and trickling out,” Spiegel said.
“There’s like a standoff here where they think Kyler should be further along than he is,” Spiegel continued. “And there is a legit question going on from the coaches’ perspective: ‘Does he really want to play? Does he really want to battle through it?’ And that’s some scary stuff.”

Players and their franchises often have differing viewpoints on prolonged injury issues, such as the soft-tissue problems that bothered Gordon during the 2025 offseason, held him out of all but three games last year and kept him sidelined throughout training camp and the preseason in 2026.
Multiple strong examples exist in the NBA, where Kawhi Leonard’s relationship with the San Antonio Spurs fractured over differing opinions on how to treat a quadriceps injury. Leonard lost trust in the franchise and its medical staff, believing team doctors were operating on behalf of the organization and not necessarily in the best interests of Leonard as a person and player.
Peyton Watson, formerly of the Denver Nuggets, accused that franchise in recent days of pressuring him to come back from a hamstring injury more quickly than he was ready to accommodate and trying to bully him back onto the floor for the playoffs.
Both Leonard and Watson ended up moving on to new situations — the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers, respectively — via trades.
There is negative value for the Bears in cutting Gordon right now, though a trade ahead of the NFL’s November 10 deadline, or potentially next offseason, sounds more likely in the cards than it ever has previously based on Poles’ comments Tuesday.
