Despite the Cincinnati Bengals primarily focusing on their defense this offseason, the team’s bread and butter is still their explosive offense led by quarterback Joe Burrow and Pro Bowl wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase.
Even in Burrow’s extended absence last season, the Bengals were still among the elite offenses in the NFL with Joe Flacco at quarterback. As a result, Cincinnati opted not to make any major moves on offense this offseason.
However, perhaps one of those under-the-radar transactions may prove big. According to one analyst, one free agent wide receiver has impressed during the early portions of training camp.
Former CFL All-Star Impresses at Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp
The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. noted in his training camp observations that free agent signing Dohnte Meyers made a notable impression. Dehner Jr. wrote: “The second receiver was Dohnte Meyers. The 5-11, 186-pound jitterbug made his way to the NFL via Presbyterian College, Delta State and the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.
His athleticism has shown up this week and he’s added a couple of nice plays on offense. He could make the team in the return game. He has joined Charlie Jones and Ke’Shawn Williams in the punt and kickoff return groups. That spot is as wide open as any.
If Meyers can pile a couple of notable returns onto this enticing skill set as a receiver, he could become the latest undersized player to find a way onto a Bengals roster through that path.”
Meyers’ path to the NFL was not an easy one. After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Meyers attended a tryout with the Falcons, but failed to secure a spot on the roster. In 2024, Meyers arrived in the CFL and made a limited impact as he appeared in only four games for the Roughriders.
Meyers then took off in the 2025 season as he totaled 1,056 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. For his efforts, he was named a CFL-West All-Star. Additionally, he helped the Roughriders win the CFL Championship.
Dohnte Meyers’ Roster Possibilities
After his strong first week, Bengals Wire’s Chris Roling noted that Meyers may be a “sneaky threat” to land a roster spot with the team.
Roling wrote: “The fact Meyers has managed to stand out in a base offense at wideout in Cincinnati is notable, considering how stacked the depth chart is. If he’s able to make some headway on special teams returns, especially in the preseason, he might just be in the conversation for the sixth spot.”
Prior to training camp, Roling predicted that Meyers would not be a part of Cincinnati’s 53-man roster; however, the former CFL All-Star may be making a case for himself.
Meyers’ impact in Cincinnati has been felt since he first joined this offseason. Regarding some media members speculating that he may secure a job with the team, Meyers said, “That’s an honour. A lot of times, you have to make your name known and make your impact. I’m aware of the situation that I’m walking into, so for somebody to already see that and identify that capability and possibility to go in there and make something happen, that’s nice.”
