Fresh off a thrilling overtime victory, the Dallas Cowboys announced they have signed pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Jerry Jones made the announcement shortly after the Cowboys topped the New York Giants 40-37.
“He’ll add some real depth,” Jones said. “He’s very credible. He’ll help us.”
Clowney had visited the Cowboys this week but left the facility without a deal. However, coach Brian Schottenheimer seemed to hint that a signing was in the works.
“Good visit. Talked to him again yesterday,” Schottenheimer said Friday. “This is one of those deals where it’s a business decision. There are two sides that have to come together. It was a great visit. We’ll kind of see how it plays out.
“When I talked to him yesterday, he was cooking dinner for his kids. Talked to them. His son goes: ‘I don’t know you.’ And I said, ‘Well, you might. You might soon.’”
The terms of Clowney’s deal with the Cowboys have not yet been announced. Over the last six years, five of Jadeveon Clowney’s contracts have been one-year rentals. His lone exception came with Carolina, where he inked a two-year deal in 2024 but still suited up for just one season. The $4.5 million he earned with the Ravens in 2023 stands as the lowest single-season paycheck of his career. By comparison, he pulled in $9.786 million during his brief stint with the Panthers.
Cowboys Looking to Replace Micah Parsons
The Cowboys are still looking to replace the production that left when the team decided to send Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Parsons had 52.5 sacks in his four seasons in Dallas.
The Cowboys have been relying on a pass-rush committee that includes Sam Williams, Dante Fowler, Donovan Ezeiruaku and Marshawn Kneeland.
Clowney is 32 years old but can still make an impact. He has 58 career sacks and is also solid against the run. He had 5.5 sacks last season in 14 games with the Panthers. He registered 9.5 with the Ravens in 2023.
The Cowboys allowed the Giants to rack up 506 yards of total offense in Sunday’s win. Most of that came through the air, with Russell Wilson completing 30 of 41 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns.
Cowboys Get Brian Schottenheimer First Win
The Cowboys went back and forth with the Giants and eventually pulled the game out with no time on the clock in overtime. Brandon Aubrey booted a 46-yard field goal for the win — the first of Schottenheimer’s career as a head coach. Aubrey nailed a 65-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.
“Cool way to win your first game. I will remember it forever,” Schottenheimer said.
The rookie head coach is happy about the win. But he also acknowledged there are a lot of things to clean up if the Cowboys want to be a winning team.
“These guys are confident. They should be. We’re a good team,” Schottenheimer said. “Now we did some stupid [expletive] in there.”
The Cowboys hit the road next week to take on the Chicago Bears, who were dismantled by the Detroit Lions 52-21 in Week 2.
