The Denver Broncos presented an air of confidence regarding Bo Nix and the chances that he will make a full recovery in time for the 2026 season. However, the details that emerged during head coach Sean Payton’s season-ending media availability created even more uncertainty.

So much so that there is some resistance to the kind of update Payton provided.

The injury itself is concerning enough, but the added uncertainty following the veteran head coach’s comments stirred the pot.

Broncos’ Update on Bo Nix Draws Strong Reaction

Payton, who is notoriously reserved with player health information, noted that Nix’s surgeon discovered during the procedure to repair the issue that the second-year QB’s ankle injury was a matter of “when” and not “if” it would happen.

“Not sure if that makes us feel better or worse,” Brian Sutterer MD posted on X. “Teams make this worse by revealing partial details. Just tell us why it was or don’t say anything else about it.”

Payton and general manager George Paton both expressed confidence in Nix’s recovery.

Payton acknowledged that it was new information for the Broncos. However, he also mentioned Nix was “predisposed” to such an issue, using the word “condition” in the same breath. Nix has had ankle surgery before. Still, Paton and the Broncos expect Nix to be active “around May.”

Some fans expressed some level of confusion and/or uncertainty regarding Payton’s comments, while others were more fearful of the implications.

One fan pointed to Payton’s usage of Nix, believing Tuesday’s remarks to be an “excuse.”

The Broncos felt Nix’s absence during the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, including on the ground, as their offense failed to build or maintain any momentum with backup Jarrett Stidham under center.

Nix is one of five quarterbacks with at least 175 rushing attempts combined over the past two seasons.

He ranked sixth among quarterbacks in rushing attempts during the 2025 regular season.

Bo Nix Predicted to Get Help

Broncos offensive tackle Garett Bolles made multiple mentions about the offense needing more playmakers to step up after their 10-7 loss to the Patriots without Nix.

Some early draft projections have the Broncos looking to add a tackle to potentially study under and, ultimately, replace Bolles or right tackle Mike McGlinchey. But ESPN’s Aaron Schatz predicted the Broncos would look to add help at wide receiver in free agency.

The target? Alec Pierce.

“After exploring a trade for Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in November, the Broncos will finally get their WR2 by signing the Colts’ Alec Pierce,” Schatz wrote in an article updated on January 25. “A big, physical receiver who can block and win on contested catches downfield, he’s a perfect fit for Nix’s play style and Payton’s offense.”

Spotrac projects Pierce could command north of $20 million annually, and could land a four-year contract worth just under $81 million.

Per Over The Cap, the Broncos have $27 million in cap space.

The Broncos would need to move some money around to not only fit Pierce but also maintain flexibility under those circumstances, but Paton suggested that while they would always act wisely, being conservative for the sake of finances would never be a real issue.
