The Dolphins officially exercised Waddle's fifth-year option Monday. Miami has made no secret of plans to pick up Waddle's fifth-year option this offseason, and the move is now official prior to Thursday's deadline. That keeps the third-year standout under contract for two more seasons and provides the Dolphins more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Waddle. The team added depth to the wideout room in the form of late-round rookies Malik Washington and Tahj Washington during the 2024 NFL Draft, but Waddle and Tyreek Hill remain the clear top targets for Tua Tagovailoa, with incumbents Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft available to split No. 3 duties.

Miami picks up fifth-year option
3 duties.
Fifth-year option to be exercised
General manager Chris Grier said Tuesday that he expects the Dolphins to pick up Waddle's fifth-year option, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports. The Dolphins have consistently stated a desire to come to terms with Waddle on a long-term contract, and Grier specifically dismissed trade rumors earlier this offseason. The third-year pro has recorded three straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, becoming the first wideout to do so in franchise history, and there's little question of his value as a No. 2 read behind Tyreek Hill. Picking up Waddle's fifth-year option will keep him under contract with the Dolphins for two more seasons.
Wanted long-term in Miami
General manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that the Dolphins have "no thoughts of trading [Waddle]," Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports. Grier dismissed recent rumors of Waddle being a trade candidate, saying "he'll be around here for a long time." Teammate Tyreek Hill recently weighed in on social media to dispel talk about such a trade, as did Waddle himself, so it's unsurprising to see the Dolphins' brass take a similar stance. The third-year pro recently became the first wideout in Miami's history to record three straight 1,000-yard seasons, posting a 72-1,014-4 receiving line across 14 regular-season games in 2023. Waddle has one more year on his rookie deal, plus a potential fifth-year option, giving the Dolphins plenty of time to negotiate a long-term contract.
Held to three catches
Waddle suffered a knee injury early in the contest, but he was able to quickly return to the field. That didn't lead to much production, however, as the Miami offense was held back offensively by a strong Kansas City defense. As a result, Waddle's streak of three games with at least 50 receiving yards came to an end.
Team-high yardage total in win
Waddle led the Dolphins in receiving yards on the afternoon, with the exclamation point coming via a 31-yard scoring grab in the fourth quarter, his third score of the season. All of Waddle's end-zone trips this season have come within the last four contests, and Sunday's performance also qualified as his first 100-yard tally of the campaign. Waddle figures to be busy once again during the Dolphins' Week 9 showdown against the powerful Chiefs offense in Germany.
