Graham Glasgow’s Fate With Detroit Lions Officially Sealed

Graham Glasgow
The Lions have informed Graham Glasgow of his fate.

The Detroit Lions have parted ways with not one but two veteran players on Monday, starting with the trade of David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, which has now been followed by parting ways with a veteran center.

The Lions have announced that Graham Glasgow, whom they selected in the third round (95th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft, has been released.

The move will give the Lions some flexibility under the salary cap, as his release will free up $5.5 million worth of space. Glasgow had been set to enter the final season of the three-year, $20 million contract he signed in 2024. Had he stayed, he would have counted as a cap hit of $8.4 million in 2026.

The club is now closer to breaking even under the cap.

Glasgow, who underwent a position change for the third time in his NFL career, was moved to center to try and help offset some of the loss from the departure of Frank Ragnow, who called it a career prior to the start of last season.

His fate with the Lions may have in fact been sealed earlier on Monday after the club received offensive lineman Juice Scruggs from the Texans as part of the deal that sent Montgomery to the Lone Star state.

The Detroit Lions Initially Drafted Graham Glasgow In The 2016 NFL Draft

Glasgow, who was playing in his second stint with the Lions, was originally selected by the club in the third round (95th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He would soon be promoted to starting left guard in just his second NFL season, and appeared in all 16 regular season games. He then started 16 and 15 games, respectively, over the next two seasons before his first tenure in Detroit came to a close.

He headed west and agreed to join the Denver Broncos, signing a four-year, $44 million contract. But he would eventually be released by the Broncos in March 2023 and decided to return to the Lions.

In the 2023 NFL season, Glasgow started 15 games primarily at right guard, and later signed a multi-year extension to remain with the Lions.

Graham Glasgow Was Known For Keeping Stacks Of Notes

Glasgow was known for his diligent note taking, and he explained his thought process in September of last season.

“You always take down the notes of the general stuff, and then from there, I have a page of scouting, then the install page, and that’s usually a whole page, too,” Glasgow explained. “Then the notes on practices throughout the week, and then the notes on after the game, because you never know when you’re going to play them again, or, in this case (Packers), you will play them again.

“So it’s nice to be able to have those thoughts based on what you thought after the game or things that you might remember that you will probably forget in a month-and-a-half.”

Following Detroit’s season-ending victory over the Chicago Bears, Glasgow didn’t sound sure on whether or not he’d be back with the club next season.

“We’ll see. I mean, I’m still under contract next year so unless that changes I’m a Detroit Lion,” he said. “But yeah, I guess, I don’t know.”
