The Detroit Lions are still riding high on their win over the Chicago Bears at Ford Field last weekend, and they certainly deserve to bask in the glow of beating their former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. This game was about more than points and winning. The Detroit Lions were proving to the world that they can be just as strong against Johnson and even beat him at his own game.
The Lions pulled off a huge 52-21 win on Sunday, and the crowd was going wild the whole time. It was good timing for the Lions, because they were just coming off a loss to fellow NFC North rivals the Green Bay Packers.
On Sunday, Johnson was given a taste of what it’s like to be disliked in the Motor City. The crowd was chanting a certain phrase that we won’t repeat here, because it has some swearing, but chances are, you already know all about this particular chant. Now, one Detroit Lions star is speaking out with his thoughts about the Lions’ fanbase’s message to Johnson.
What the Detroit Lions Think of the Ben Johnson Chant
On the Wednesday, Sept. 17 episode of the St. Brown Podcast, which Lions player Amon-Ra St. Brown hosts with his brother, Equanimeous, the Lions receiver was asked by his brother to give his thoughts about the chants that happened on Sunday.
His five-word message on it was classy: “I don’t think that’s right.”
For more context, he said, “I don’t think that’s right. I don’t think he deserves that, just because of how much he’s done for us.” He added that booing is one thing, but the chant that happened on Sunday, “I don’t think that’s right.”
It’s great that the Lions‘ base is so passionate about the team that they wanted to fight for them, in a sense, by making trouble for Johnson. But, it was also kind of St. Brown to stand up for his former coach. If anything, it was a classy move and one that makes us proud he’s in Detroit.
It wasn’t a surprise, by any means, when Johnson took a head coaching job after last season. But, the bad look came when he did so after heading up the Lions in a horrible postseason game that resulted in the team quickly being taken out of the running for a championship.
Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions Receives Award
In other Lions news, quarterback Jared Goff has already been given his first honor of the 2025-26 season. Goff has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week following the win over the Chicago Bears.
According to ESPN, Goff finished “with a near perfect passer rating (156.0) while throwing for 334 yards and five touchdowns.” Now, he’s getting some much-deserved recognition from the NFL.
So, there are plenty of reasons for the Detroit Lions to be happy this week. But, they have a tough opponent up next on their schedule, because the Detroit Lions will take on the Baltimore Ravens in Monday Night Football on Monday, September 22.
