The Green Bay Packers‘ offseason took a sharp turn on Tuesday when it was announced that star, All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs had turned himself in to Hobart-Lawrence Police Station on May 26 after a warrant was put out for his arrest three days prior.
Jacobs was subsequently booked into Brown County Jail, and where he was held without bond.
However, per a media release from Brown County District Attorney’s office, the three-time Pro Bowler has been released from jail as they are not ready to press charges at this time.
Josh Jacobs Released From Jail; Investigation Ongoing
“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision.” District Attorney David L. Lasee wrote in the statement.
“Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued. Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date.”
Whilst Jacobs will be content with being released from jail, this does mean the former Raider is getting off scot-free.
If the DA finds that there is sufficient evidence to criminally charge the running back with one of the five counts released yesterday upon his arrest; three of domestic abuse, one of intimidation and another of strangulation and suffocation – the latter of which has a maximum penalty of six years in prison – Jacobs could well find himself back at Brown County Jail.
Should Green Bay Be Looking at Other Running Back Options?
Nothing is confirmed either way with Jacobs’ situation, considering that the DA has not decided whether to pursue criminal charges against him given the current state of the evidence.
However, there is still the distinct possibility that the 28-year old either sees himself in further legal hot water over the coming few months, or that he could face a suspension from the league if they choose to partake in their own internal investigation.
The Packers made a perhaps surprising choice to not only not re-sign second choice back Emanuel Wilson, who had impressed whilst filling in for Jacobs at times last season as RB2, but to then not add to the room further in either free agency or the draft.
Instead, Green Bay has decided to roll with third down back Chris Brooks and 2024 third round pick MarShawn Lloyd, who has played in just one game over the course of his now two-year NFL career due to a seemingly never-ending influx of injuries.
If the Jacobs situation looks to worsen, expect the Packers to look at other options around the league to solidify the position group.
