Head coach Matt LaFleur wasn’t exactly forthright while addressing his Green Bay Packers future after the team’s playoff collapse.
But since then, the head coach signed a contract extension with the Packers. While speaking at the NFL’s annual league meeting Monday, LaFleur was a lot more upbeat about his future.
“I’m ecstatic to be back with the Packers,” said LaFleur, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
“This is a 1-of-1 organization. Love the organization,” he added.
The Packers announced a contract extension for LaFleur on January 30. Green Bay also signed general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball to extensions.
“We are excited to extend our commitment to Brian, Matt and Russ as the leaders of our football operations,” said Packers CEO Ed Policy. “The entire Packers organization looks forward to supporting every effort to bring our community and fans another championship that they very much deserve.”
Matt LaFleur ‘Ecstatic’ to be Back With Packers
LaFleur’s answer Monday was quite different from the one he provided reporters after the team’s playoff defeat. But instead of his contract, LaFleur kept the focus on his players in January.
“With all due respect to your question, now’s not the time for that,” LaFleur said of his future with the Packers. “I’m just hurting for these guys. I can only think about what just happened, and there will be time for that.”
The time for that became late January when LaFleur agreed to an extension.
The Packers haven’t wavered in their belief in LaFleur. But fans on social media have expressed their doubts and frustration with the head coach.
That came to a boiling point at the end of last season when the Packers lost four straight before the playoffs.
Green Bay then held an 18-point halftime lead against the Chicago Bears in the NFC wild card matchup. However, the Bears scored 28 of the game’s final 34 points to win 31-27.
LaFleur has been one of the most successful NFL head coaches this decade. Beginning in 2019 with the Packers, he owns a 76-40-1 record.
But he’s lost three straight playoff games. LaFleur hasn’t led Green Bay to the NFC championship since 2020.
Time Ticking for LaFleur With the Packers?
The extension should give LaFleur long-term security. Without it, he would have entered 2026 as a lame duck.
But not everyone sees his job as fully secure. The Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Pete Dougherty argued LaFleur will have a set amount of time to get the Packers back closer to contending for a title.
“This is just my speculation. I’m thinking that this gives [LaFleur and Gutekunst] two years to improve on what they’ve done,” said Dougherty at the beginning of March.
If that’s the case, this and next spring will be critical offseasons for LaFleur and Gutekunst. They have to make improvements to the Green Bay roster to keep up in the very competitive NFC North.
The Packers will also have to do that without a first-round pick in either year.
To land another extension in Green Bay, LaFleur may have to win a lot more in January. He owns a 3-6 playoff career record.
