The Green Bay Packers are adding a former Pro Bowl talent to their cornerback room ahead of the 2025 NFL playoffs after their latest injuries at the position.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers are claiming two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys and will add him to their 53-man roster for Week 18’s regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.
“Sources: #Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs is joining the #Packers. An addition before the playoffs,” Rapoport wrote on X on December 31. “A fascinating claim by the Packers.”
Diggs made the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons for the Cowboys in 2021 and 2022, leading the league — by a significant margin — with 11 interceptions in his first Pro Bowl season. While injuries have limited him to just five games in 2025, he will provide the Packers’ banged-up cornerback room with much-needed experience down the stretch.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters earlier in the day that he did not expect that veteran cornerback Nate Hobbs would return for the playoffs after exiting Week 17’s loss to Baltimore with a knee injury. The Packers also lost backup Kamal Hadden to an ankle injury against the Ravens and placed him on injured reserve on December 30.
The Packers (9-6-1) will face the Vikings (8-8) on the road at 1 p.m. ET on January 4.
Trevon Diggs Has Struggled Beyond Injuries in 2025
Diggs’ history as a Pro Bowl makes him an intriguing addition for the Packers at this stage in the 2025 season, but it should be acknowledged that they are not claiming a player who has been playing up to that level in 2025, even when he has been healthy.
According to Pro Football Focus, Diggs has allowed opposing quarterbacks a perfect 158.3 passer rating on 20 targets in coverage this season for the Cowboys, giving up a league-most 17.9 yards per reception. He has zero interceptions or pass breakups.
Diggs has also struggled as a run defender and tackler throughout his career, making him an odd fit for a Packers defense that typically values those skills in cornerbacks.
Perhaps Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has seen Diggs’ past success with generating takeaways and has some ideas for getting him in the right spots to make a difference for his defense, but adding him is a gamble more than anything else.
Packers Also Picked Up Rest of Trevon Diggs’ Contract
Another intriguing thing about the Packers claiming Diggs off waivers is that, in doing so, they also agreed to pick up the remainder of the $97 million contract that he signed with the Cowboys in 2023, which, frankly, is not as expensive as it sounds for them.
According to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s JR Radcliffe, Diggs will cost the team roughly $500,000 for the remainder of the 2025 season, counting the $472,000 he is due to make in Week 18 pay and a $59,000 bonus for being active in the final game.
The thing is, Diggs could also make roughly $15 million from the Packers on a team option if they keep him through the 2026 offseason. They can avoid paying it if they release him, but it forces a decision — and gives them an opportunity to retain him if he makes an impact for them in the playoffs.
