The Philadelphia Eagles are still searching for their next offensive coordinator after demoting Kevin Patullo, and their latest interview was with a former Houston Texans coach.
Current Miami Dolphins senior passing game coordinator and former Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has interviewed with the Eagles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
DeMeco Ryans’ first offensive coordinator had an amazing first year in Houston; he received a ton of requests for head coaching interviews.
But after a shaky second season, Slowik was let go, and the former San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator spent a season with Mike McDaniel in Miami learning under the talented offensive mind.
What Happened Between Bobby Slowik and the Texans?
The decision to move on from Slowik following the Houston Texans‘ 2024 playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs made sense.
Despite two successful seasons with deep playoff runs and solid play from quarterback C.J. Stroud, the Texans’ offense regressed from 13th in the league in 2023 to 23rd in 2024, according to Sumer Sports’ EPA/play.
After the playoff loss to the Chiefs, Ryans fired Slowik and hired Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nick Caley to replace him.
“Overall, offensively, it wasn’t where we wanted to be. There were challenges throughout the year, that is every year,” Ryans told reporters after moving on from Slowik.
“You have challenges, you have ups and downs where you try to figure out the course, who we have and how to make it work. We have to improve.”
It seemed at the time that Ryans wasn’t the only member of the Texans ready to move on from Slowik.
Anonymous players told ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime they didn’t feel like the offense had a true identity under their former offensive coordinator.
“We simply weren’t good enough offensively. We had all season to make adjustments and improvements, and it never happened,” a source told Bien-Aime.
“I don’t think we had a true identity of what the (expletive) we wanted to do…When teams would take away what we wanted to do, we didn’t have answers for it.”
Maybe a year with the Miami Dolphins has refreshed Slowik’s offensive acuity a bit, and now he’s ready to run an offense again.
What Would the Eagles Get in Bobby Slowik?
Slowik’s resume, on paper, is a good one. While he was let go by the Houston Texans, you can’t take away the fact that Stroud had one of the greatest rookie seasons for a quarterback of all time under his tutelage.
In 2023, the former No. 2 overall pick completed 63.9% of his passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, shattering rookie passing records for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception (192) and the most passing yards in a single game by a rookie (470).
He was a Pro Bowler, took home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and finished eighth in MVP voting.
Now, Stroud and Jalen Hurts are two different quarterbacks. Will Slowik be able to work the same magic with the former Super Bowl MVP the same way he did with Stroud in his rookie season?
Who knows for sure, but he has proven to be capable of coordinating at least an above-average offense, and after the struggles of the Philadelphia Eagles this past season, fans may be eager to get that level of competency at least.
