Two weeks into the 2025 NFL campaign, the Indianapolis Colts are arguably the biggest surprise across the league. After destroying the Miami Dolphins in Week 1, the Colts pulled out a last-second victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 2, confirming that their season-opening win was not a fluke.
The play of Daniel Jones under center is the main reason for Indianapolis’ success, and the Colts want to ensure that he has the tools needed to succeed under center for the remainder of the year. On Tuesday, that led to them making an interesting signing in free agency to bolster the depth along their offensive line.
Colts Sign Offensive Lineman Jimmy Morrissey in Free Agency
The player Indy is bringing to town is veteran offensive lineman Jimmy Morrissey, who hasn’t played in a game since 2023. After getting selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders, Morrissey didn’t crack the team’s active roster, but he ended up on their practice squad. Midway through the season, the Houston Texans signed him to their active roster, as they needed someone to come in and fill in at center for them.
Morrissey spent three seasons bouncing between the Texans‘ practice squad and their active roster, suiting up for 14 games during that time, four of which were starts. In 2024, Morrissey spent the year on the New York Giants‘ practice squad, but his time with the team came to an end this year when he was waived in August.
Since then, Morrissey has been waiting for his next opportunity, and it appears to have come his way on Tuesday. With the Colts looking for more depth on their offensive line as they look to protect Jones under center, that has led to them signing Morrissey to their practice squad ahead of their Week 3 action.
We have signed LB Austin Ajiake to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and signed C Jimmy Morrissey to the practice squad,” the Colts announced in a post on X.

In a perfect world, the Colts won’t ever have to use Morrissey on their offensive line, but in the event they need help at this spot, he’s a veteran with experience who can take the field and get the job done in a pinch. To this point, though, Indianapolis’ offensive line appears to be healthy, and they are playing very well, as they have largely kept Jones standing upright under center, while also opening up big holes in the running game for Jonathan Taylor.
In the blink of an eye, the Colts appear to have emerged as the frontrunner to win the AFC South this season, as both the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans have yet to win a game, while the Jacksonville Jaguars threw away a win against the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. Indy will look to continue its winning ways in Week 3, and it appears to have a good shot to do so, as it will be taking on the Titans on Sunday afternoon.
