eek one of the 2025 NFL season is here. Now that the preseason is over and all 32 teams have set their 53-man rosters, focus now shifts towards preparing for the opening night of the season. In what will be a competitive and interesting season, the goal remains simple for every team– win the Super Bowl and hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February.
The Jacksonville Jaguars enter the regular season as one of the league’s most intriguing teams. Hitting the reset button after another down year in 2024, the franchise brought in a new regime in head coach Liam Coen and general manager who they hope will restore life into a franchise that was once a perennial playoff contender. And with the start of the season just days away, the Jaguars revealed who will be their team captains for the 2025 campaign.
Jaguars Name Team Captains
The role of an NFL team captain is very extensive and a huge honor. Not only are the players selected relied on to be on-field leaders but when it comes to off-field stuff, they also need to exhibit strong leadership. This season, the Jaguars selected six players who will don the iconic ‘C’ patch on their jersey. The captains? Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, defensive end Josh Hines-Allen, linebacker Foyesade Oluokon, punter Logan Cooke, defensive back Jourdan Lewis and center Robert Hainsey.
According to Coen, the captains were chosen via a player vote late last week. Each team has a different system for naming captains, ranging from coach’s selections to only naming weekly captains, but the Jaguars opted to keep it simple and leave it all up to the players. Coen noted that it is very likely that a seventh captain will be added, but that role would be weekly.
“The nice thing is you didn’t have to fudge it to get what you wanted,” Coen said. “It was pretty clear based on the votes and the ballots that these were the six guys. It was cool to acknowledge the amount of guys who did receive votes throughout the team.”
Assessing the Choices for Captain
Lewis and Hainsey are new to the team this season, joining in free agency over the offseason. But Lawrence, Hines-Allen, Oluokun and Cooke have been around a while and are each well-respected veterans within the locker room. And while it is rarer for newcomers to be named captains, Lewis especially, earned the role thanks in large part to what he has brought leadership wise throughout training camp and the preseason.
“It feels really good, especially coming into a new locker room with guys who have been here,” Lewis said. “Being in a room with my peers and them seeing me as a leader feels really good. We’re going to be a good football team, so that means a lot.”
The Jaguars begin their regular season on Sunday, Sept. 7 at home against the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) and will air locally on Fox and is available to watch on the NFL Redzone channel.
