GM Trent Baalke said Saturday that the Jaguars will exercise the fifth-year option on Lawrence's rookie contract, John Shipley of SI.com reports. Teams need to make such decisions for 2021 first-round picks by Thursday, and Jacksonville intends to exercise those options for both Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne. Lawrence will be working with a familiar backfield of Etienne and Tank Bigsby in 2024, but his receiving corps has been jostled a bit, with WR Calvin Ridley departing for the AFC South rival Titans and rookie second-rounder Brian Thomas and free-agent pickup Gabe Davis replacing him. While Lawrence has tossed for 4,000-plus yards in back-to-back campaigns, he has yet to reach 30 touchdowns through the air in any of his three seasons as a pro.
Lawrence will enter the 2024 season without the presence of Calvin Ridley, who is set to sign a four-year, $92 million contract with the Titans, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports. Lawrence suited up for one less game last season after playing all 17 in 2022, but despite Ridley's presence atop the depth chart, he took a step back in terms of passing yards (4,016 vs. 4,113), touchdowns (21 vs. 25), and increased his interception total (14 vs. eight). That said, the loss of Ridley to free agency still represents a knock to Lawrence's prospects for 2024, especially with Zay Jones also being a speculated cap casualty. The addition of Gabe Davis from Buffalo, who joins Christian Kirk (groin), does something to mitigate those concerns, and the Jaguars still have plenty of time to make further moves in free agency or April's draft.
Lawrence's one-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter came one play after a third-down defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone kept Jacksonville's offense on the field. After failing to post a rushing score through nine games, Lawrence has three rushing touchdowns in the last two games. He also connected with Calvin Ridley for a one-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to take the lead in the third quarter. Lawrence got off to a slow start in 2023, but he set a new season high in passing yards in this game and has picked up the pace as both a passer and a rusher heading into a Week 13 home game against a Bengals team that's playing without Joe Burrow (wrist).
Lawrence accounted for all four of Jacksonville's touchdowns, connecting twice with Calvin Ridley in the end zone on passes of three and 20 yards. He also found the end zone twice on the ground -- his first rushing scores of the season -- from nine and five yards away. The performance marked only the third time this season that Lawrence has tallied multiple scores, and he also chipped in strong efficiency through the air by averaging 8.2 yards per attempt. The latter is particularly positive, as Lawrence pushed the ball down the field accurately by completing five passes of at least 20 yards -- matching his season high. A similar performance may be needed in Week 12 as the Jaguars travel to Houston for a pivotal divisional matchup.
Lawrence was under duress throughout against a San Francisco defensive line that sacked him five times. Still, the quarterback shoulders a substantial portion of the blame for the blowout loss, as the Jaguars scored a season-low three points and two of Lawrence's three turnovers came in 49ers territory. Lawrence will have a nice opportunity to bounce back in Week 11 against the Titans, but his 9:6 TD:INT through nine games is disappointing.
With Jacksonville leading 6-0 and looking for more, Lawrence was picked off in the end zone on 1st-and-goal. Lawrence finally got the offense into the end zone with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Travis Etienne in the third quarter, but that was his only touchdown pass of the afternoon, as Lawrence has a modest 9:4 TD:INT heading into Jacksonville's Week 9 bye after posting a 25:8 TD:INT last season. The 24-year-old quarterback came eight yards shy of his second 300-yard performance of 2023 after reaching that mark four times in 2022.
