With wedding buzz building around Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs legend Travis Kelce, a major federal antitrust lawsuit against concert promoter Live Nation is suddenly placing the spotlight back on the ticket controversy surrounding Swift’s blockbuster Eras Tour. Swift’s name surfaced in opening arguments by lawyers for the United States Department of Justice.
Since Swift and Travis Kelce announced that they were engaged before the 2025 NFL season, it was always inevitable that the run-up to their wedding would be filled with distractions. As the most famous pop star in America, according to a YouGov poll, Swift’s high-velocity career brings a new event or landmark almost every day. Meanwhile, Kelce’s ongoing drama over his prospective retirement has been a top story in the sports world.
Swift’s fans who can’t get enough of Swift-Kelce wedding news probably don’t appreciate the distractions, but they are unavoidable, and a new, potentially big one appeared on Tuesday when a huge federal lawsuit that could potentially reshape the music industry that Swift dominates got underway in a Manhattan courtroom.
What does the lawsuit have to do with Swift? While Kelce’s megastar fiancé is not a party to the lawsuit, her presence “looms” over the conflict, according to a report Tuesday by The Hollywood Reporter, because one of the major issues that sparked the federal lawsuit was the massive controversy over the availability and pricing of tickets for Swift’s Eras Tour.
What is the Lawsuit About and How is Taylor Swift Involved?
The lawsuit was brought by the federal Department of Justice against Live Nation, the promotional company that controls almost 90 percent of all concert ticket sales, the DOJ says. According to the Hollywood Reporter account, federal prosecutors accuse Live Nation of “using that power to force venues to use Live Nation as promoter and Ticketmaster as a ticket agent or face the retaliation of Live Nation pulling shows from their venues.”
Live Nation was not involved in promoting Swift’s Eras Tour, but the ticketing company it owns, Ticketmaster, was responsible for selling tickets for shows on the tour, which reportedly earned Swift herself about $360 million and sold about $2 billion worth of tickets.
According to a New York Times report, the average ticket price to see a Taylor Swift performance on the Eras Tour was $204. That’s more than 150 percent of the average price charged by the top 100 concert tours in 2023, the most recent year for which data was available, the Times reported.
But the demand for Swift tickets caused long delays and site outages on Ticketmaster, shutting many fans out from getting tickets.
Will Swift be called to testify in the federal lawsuit against Live Nation? That much is not yet clear, with opening arguments and jury selection completed only on Tuesday. But there is no question that the severe problems with ticket sales to her Eras Tour will form an important piece of federal prosecutors’ case against Live Nation.
Swift has not issued a public comment on the lawsuit since it got underway, likely trying instead to focus on her wedding plans with Kelce. Of course, neither Swift nor Kelce have commented on the wedding plans either, at least not in any specific way. But recent media reports have indicated that the likely date of the much-anticipated wedding will be June 13, with Ocean House in Rhode Island as the setting.
Another bride-to-be had booked the venue for June 13, but according to a report by New York Post Page Six, Swift “dipped into her deep pockets” to pay off the other bride and book the venue for herself and Kelce.
