There is one massive Kansas City Chiefs question heading into a dreary January, and it’s whether or not superstar tight end Travis Kelce will announce his NFL retirement after the news and rumors that the future Hall of Famer nearly called it quits last offseason.
Kelce made it known that he has yet to decide on his future following the Chiefs’ Week 17 loss to the Denver Broncos. Having said that, NFL insider James Palmer made one thing very clear on December 26: Kelce’s presence still adds a ton of “value,” and KC should continue to urge the legendary TE to come back for one more year.
“A few nuggets I’ve gathered,” Palmer began his post. “Travis Kelce is not what he once was as a player. And that’s fine. Over the last couple of years, he’s figured out how to still get open. Winning early in routes. Being smarter in how he plays and gets open by using his [football] IQ. He knows he doesn’t move like he used to, so he’s found ways to create space for himself by never wasting a step or movement.”
“[Kelce] still has the unique ability to make those around him better,” the NFL insider went on. “He still has the ability to find ways to make big plays on the biggest stages. His intangibles are worth so much on the field and in the locker room. He practices so hard. It’s contagious. You have to practice a certain way with [Patrick] Mahomes, and he spreads that throughout the pass catchers.”
Finally, Palmer concluded that “whatever he decides to do, Travis Kelce still brings so much value.”
Travis Kelce Retirement Timeline Could Mirror Brother, Jason Kelce

The Chiefs’ final game of a disappointing 2025 campaign will be played on January 4, 2026, but don’t expect Kelce to make a retirement announcement on January 5.
On December 26, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler pointed to Jason Kelce’s previous retirement timelines as a potential model for his younger brother to follow.
“Re: Travis Kelce’s future, Jason Kelce’s timeline in final years feels relevant,” Fowler noted, listing the following Jason Kelce decision dates. “March 10, 2022: Announced return. March 13, 2023: Announced return. [And] March 4, 2024: Announced retirement.”
“Travis is his own man, but it wouldn’t shock if he took some real time to figure things out,” the insider added. And this certainly makes a lot of sense.
Kelce has stated that he won’t put the Chiefs in a bind by dragging out his retirement decision well into free agency and the draft, but there’s no need to rush it either.
Chances are, the global superstar will take January and February to think things over, given that Kansas City has no playoff games to occupy his attention. Then, if he’s anything like his older brother, he’ll inform the Chiefs of his final decision just before the start of NFL free agency in March.
Chiefs Must Sign Travis Kelce to a New Contract If He Decides to Return
There is one other matter for the Chiefs and Kelce to figure out. If he decides to return, Kansas City must offer him a new contract.
“I’ve got to hope that if I do want to come back, the Chiefs are willing to bring me back. It’s a two-way street on that,” Kelce told KC legend Tony Gonzalez in a pre-recorded Week 17 interview.
This is true, but as Palmer noted, there’s no reason to think the Chiefs wouldn’t want Kelce back.
The hope is that the two sides can agree on a fair one-year deal that doesn’t hamstring them financially, while also paying Kelce with the level of respect that he has earned.
Who knows, maybe Kelce signs for dirt cheap, considering he doesn’t have much to worry about financially. But that’s all another aspect of his retirement decision.
If Kelce does elect to run it back in 2026, Chiefs signing news should immediately follow. There’s pretty much no scenario where the future Hall of Famer plays for another team.
