The Las Vegas Raiders continue to be hard at work finding their next head coach. They’ve interviewed many candidates from various backgrounds, but perhaps the most interesting name they’ve spoken to is Denver Broncos offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.
The former quarterback is only 30 years old and started coaching in 2023. He has very limited experience as a coach, but he did play in the NFL for six years. However, people who have worked with him think very highly of his potential.
Webb likely needs a few more years of experience before he’s considered a top head coaching candidate, but that might not stop the Raiders from taking a big swing. John Madden is arguably the greatest coach in the history of the franchise, and he was an unproven 32-year-old when they hired him.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer made predictions for each coaching opening, and he believes that Webb could be the man in Las Vegas.
“He has the presence, he has the personality to reach players, “Breer said of Webb in a video posted to YouTube. “He’s just a really unique guy, and I think the people in Denver would tell you that his football acumen is where it needs to be, so I think Davis would make a lot of sense for them. … It’d be a gamble, of course.”
Is Webb Ready to Be a Head Coach?
Webb has never been a playcaller outside of a preseason game for the Broncos this season and has only been coaching under Sean Payton for three years. Hiring him would be a huge risk.
Even when Sean McVay was hired at 30 years old, he was at least an offensive coordinator. That said, the Raiders might be ready to take a big swing. Pete Carroll was supposed to be the safe choice, but he was a disaster.
Webb might end up flopping, but nobody is going to fault the Raiders for taking a big swing, especially since most people seem to believe he has a bright future in coaching. It might take him a year or two to figure things out, but this might be the only offseason the Raiders have a chance to hire him. If they think he’s a rising star, then they might as well give him a shot. It’s not like the team has the roster to compete for a Super Bowl next season, regardless of who is the head coach.
Kliff Kingsbury Could Be Webb’s OC
Another thing that makes Webb interesting is that he could bring in an experienced offensive coordinator if he’s not ready to call plays. He played college football at Texas Tech for three years, where he was coached by Kliff Kingsbury.
Kingsbury just spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, but he’s a free agent now. Webb could hire him as the offensive coordinator to help him navigate being a head coach for the first time. Kingsbury also has experience being a young head coach, so he could be a resource there.
The big question is whether or not Webb feels like he’s truly ready to lead a team.
