Under new coach Pete Carroll, a future Hall of Famer, and minority owner Tom Brady — another surefire Hall of Famer who has taken an active role in the team’s operations, the Las Vegas Raiders were expected to field a team this season that could at least compete for a playoff spot, if not send the Raiders to their first Super Bowl since 2002.

Founded in 1960 as an original member of the American Football League, which merged with the NFL in 1970 — four years after the two leagues’ champions met in the first Super Bowl — the Raiders have appeared in five Super Bowls and won three — the most recent coming in 1983 when the team was located briefly in Los Angeles.

But things have not worked out for the Raiders this season, with the 2025 campaign now past its halfway mark. With a 3-5 record, Las Vegas appears destined to miss the postseason for a fourth year in a row and 21st in the last 23 seasons.

Losing Seasons Sparks Crosby Rumors

The Silver and Black’s latest season of futility has of course led to widespread rumors that the storied franchise will start selling off its best players at Tuesday’s trade deadline, and the Raiders have no bigger star than their elite, seventh-year edge rusher Maxx Crosby.

The team that Crosby has been connected to, if not most frequently, then at least very frequently, is the Chicago Bears, who at 5-3 and second place in the NFC North finally appear to have a window open to make a run a deep playoff campaign — and an upgrade of Crosby’s caliber could give Chicago the push it needs.

But on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before the trade deadline was set to strike, longtime NFL Insider Jay Glazer of Fox Sports threw a bucket of cold water on the Crosby rumors — as well as on any other rumors that would see the Bears making a significant deadline deal.

No ‘Splashy’ Deals For Rumored Crosby Target

Glazer replied to a fan question as to whether Bears general manager Ryan Poles would “be active” on Tuesday, saying that, yes, he did believe Poles would take some action. But nothing to get anyone’s hopes up.

“That doesn’t mean it’s going to land a big-name player. There just aren’t those level of players being shopped unless it’s a huge haul and for some guys their deals are up after this year so that complicates things too,” Glazer wrote on his social media account. “I don’t see anything splashy.”

A deal for Crosby would be the definition of “splashy,” so Glazer’s update unquestionably ends the rampant Crosby-to-Bears speculation.

Crosby’s Cryptic Message

Some names that have been tossed around in trade buzz are of course guys like Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson, but the price tags on those two are likely way out of Poles’ budget if Glazer’s report is to be believed,” wrote Ryan Heckman of the Bears news site BGO (Bears Goggles On).

Crosby himself fueled speculation that he was on the trade block with a cryptic social media message posted on Sunday.

“Raider Nation I Love Yall With Everything In My Heart & Soul. Yall Deserve Better. Stay As One, It Will Change,” the 28-year-old 2019 fourth-round draft pick wrote.
