To think that New England Patriots legendary head coach Bill Belichick is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer is insane, and Las Vegas Raiders’ minority owner and seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady feels the same way.
Belichick, who ranks first in all-time Super Bowl wins (6), SB appearances (9), and playoff wins (31), fell short of the 40 out of 50 votes needed for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility, sources told ESPN.
“Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?” Belichick asked an associate. He also said, “What does a guy have to do?” It doesn’t make sense, and Brady gave his thoughts on his longtime head coach not making the Hall of Fame.
Tom Brady Responds to Bill Belichick Not Making the Hall of Fame
In an appearance with Seattle Sports, Brady gave his blunt opinion on Belichick not making the Hall of Fame.
“I just think that, to me, I don’t understand it. I mean, I was with him every day. If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should everbe a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it. He’s incredible. There’s no coach I’d rather play for. If I’m picking one coach to go out there, to win a Super Bowl, give me one season, I’m taking Bill Belichick. So that’s enough said.”
A major controversay going on with how this whole process came to be is surrounding NFL Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian.
According to ESPN, Polian was a vocal figure in bringing up the infamous Spygate and Deflategate scandals surrounding Belichick’s time with the Patriots, and an anonymous voter said Polian told people he believed Belichick should “wait a year” as penance for Spygate.
Yet, Polian said that he could not remember with 100% certainty if he voted for Belichick, saying he was 95% sure he voted for a coach and a player, “most likely Greenwood.”
“I was shocked to learn Bill didn’t get in,” Polian said. “He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.”
Hmm. Seems like Polian didn’t fully believe Belichick deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Brady and the Raiders Have Other Problems to Worry About
Brady isn’t on the Patriots anymore, and now, as the minority owner of the Raiders, he has bigger issues to worry about.
The Raiders, as of January 28th, 2:00 p.m. Eastern, are just one of two teams without a head coach. The Arizona Cardinals (the other team without a head coach) were viewed by many around the league as the least appealing destination for a head coach (tough division, QB uncertainty, etc.).
But Las Vegas, with the second-most cap space in the NFL, the No. 1 overall pick, and a foundation to build on, are running out of options.
Davis Webb is a candidate the Raiders are interested in, yet there’s competition from the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Baltimore Ravens, all of whom have submitted requests to interview him for their offensive coordinator positions.
On the other hand, Klint Kubiak has been the hot topic among many NFL circles, yet most believe he will stay another year in Seattle and wait for the right opportunity.
Could there be another candidate that the Raiders end up hiring, or can they lure in Webb or Kubiak? Time will tell.
