Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady recently revealed what he believes to be one of the most important aspects of a quarterback’s approach to football, an approach that many people believe Shedeur Sanders does not follow.
“When a quarterback throws a touchdown pass, I actually watch to see who he goes and celebrates with,” Brady said in an interview with broadcaster Cris Collinsworth and Pro Football Focus. “Because what did I do? I looked for my offensive linemen every time.”
He then explained the kinds of celebrations he does not like to see from a QB. Fans were quick to point out that the rookie Cleveland Browns quarterback Sanders often celebrates in the way Brady clearly dislikes.
“I told the linemen, we’re all running to the end zone and we’re celebrating as a team, because I think that’s way more intimidating than a quarterback doing his six shooter guns and pointing up in the crowd and doing all that other b——- that’s very self-promotional, but it’s not about winning.” Brady said. “I think winning in football is about always a team attitude first.”
Sanders, of course, has a signature personal celebration that is part of his brand. He holds up his wrist as if to display a watch after every touchdown.
Brady’s comments were also related to what he looks for when commenting on quarterbacks during a broadcast. But nonetheless, he clearly thinks attitude and celebrating directly affects winning, which would affect the quarterbacks he recommends or doesn’t recommend to the Raiders.
Did Brady Really Have A Say on Sanders?
While Tom Brady certainly has a voice in the Raiders organization, he owns only a 5% stake in the franchise.
If general manager John Spytek and Coach Pete Carroll were high on Sanders, would Brady’s voice have mattered?
Raiders fans will likely never know for sure. It’s worth noting, however, that Brady reportedly voiced a lot of support for quarterback Cam Miller, a sixth-round draft choice by the Raiders despite staying hands-off for most of Las Vegas’s draft process.
Miller was drafted after Sanders had already been selected by the Browns. The former North Dakota State QB failed to make Las Vegas’s 53-man roster and is now on the practice squad.
Raiders Quarterback Room Has Undergone A Total Overhaul
Miller is far from the only quarterback the Raiders added to their QB room this offseason.
In fact, Aidan O’Connell is the only quarterback on the Raiders roster that was there last season.
The Raiders’ new starter is Geno Smith, who they acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks.
Interestingly, Smith is somewhat known for trash talk and celebrating. His self-promoting postgame quotes are the stuff of legend, and he’ll do celebrations from time to time, such as hitting Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry’s iconic “night-night” celebration.
But in one of Smith’s first moments on the field in a Raiders uniform, he celebrated Ashton Jeanty’s first preseason touchdown with the rookie. That was a clear sign that he cares greatly about the team.
The Raiders also traded for QB Kenny Pickett, who ironically was competing with Sanders for a spot on the Browns’ depth chart. Pickett’s move to Las Vegas not only helped the Raiders navigate O’Connell’s injury, but opened up a spot for the Browns to keep Shedeur Sanders as their third string QB.
