The Miami Dolphins elected to breathe new life into their franchise by hiring first-time NFL head coach Jeff Hafley. At just 46 years old, Hafley continues the trend of young head coaches getting a nod in today’s NFL.
Hafley’s second hire as head coach, after poaching the Buffalo Bills‘ special teams coordinator Chris Tabor yesterday, was to promote passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator.
“The Dolphins are hiring Bobby Slowik, their senior passing game coordinator, as the new offensive coordinator,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. “The former Texans OC helped CJ Stroud to his stellar rookie season. Now, he’s back as a play-caller in Miami.”
Slowik was hired by Mike McDaniel and ex-general manager Chris Grier last offseason after guiding the Houston Texans to two-straight playoff appearances in his first offensive coordinator job.
He is the son of NFL Super Bowl-winning coach Bob Slowik.
Bobby Slowik’s Coaching Resumé
Slowik comes from a rich family history of NFL coaching.
His first hire was as a defensive assistant for the Washington Commanders in 2010 when he was just 22 years old. He was in Washington for three years, helping as a video analyst, which apparently opened his eyes to a new passion.
He left the NFL world to be an analyst for Pro Football Focus. Slowik wrote and served as an on air personality for PFF for three years before deciding to get back into coaching.
His first job back in the NFL came with the San Francisco 49ers, where he was a member of several NFC Championship-winning squads.
He started as a defensive quality control coach, before being promoted to an offensive assistant, and promoted once more to a passing game assistant.
After four years and four promotions, Slowik became the offensive pass game specialist in 2021 and the passing game coordinator in 2022.
Now jut 38-years-old, Slowik earns another promotion as he continues climbing up the ranks on offensive coaching staffs around the league.
Bobby’s Father, Bob Slowik
Bob Slowik was a part of the 1992 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl run in his first year of coaching in the NFL.
He would go on to spend two decades hopping from team to team, helping with defenses around the country.
Slowik’s last NFL job came in 2013 with Washington. He spent six years away from coaching after a long career spanning two decades, but has since gotten reinvolved.
Slowik joined the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL in 2019 and became the defensive coordinator.
He then went to the Calgary Stampeders, where he has been for the last five seasons and currently serves as the DC.
