The Minnesota Vikings are expected to open up the 2026 NFL season with Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback.
After watching J.J. McCarthy struggle to stay healthy last season and play inconsistent football when he was on the field, the Vikings made the quick decision to look elsewhere. The move to sign Murray doesn’t necessarily mean that McCarthy is out, but it’s clear that Kevin O’Connell wanted to upgrade.
Murray could be exactly the kind of upgrade that Minnesota needed to get back on track.
At times throughout his NFL career since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Arizona Cardinals back in 2019, Murray has looked like an MVP talent. In other moments, he has been a pure disappointment. He’ll be looking to solidify his career with the Vikings.
While there has been a lot of excitement about Minnesota signing Murray, a new update has been shared with reason for concern about his ability to succeed.
Former NFL QB Offers Concerning Take on Vikings, Kyler Murray
Dan Orlovsky, a former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst, offered up a potential reason to be concerned about Murray’s fit with the Vikings.
He made his thoughts clear during an appearance on “Get Up.”
“You’re taking a very unique player and trying to fit him into a very specific scheme,” Orlovsky said.
That is a very good point. Murray is unique skill-set, while Minnesota and O’Connell’s offense is more focused on having an elite pocket passer.
Throughout his career to this point, Murray has been better on the run. He is lethal when he can get out into space with his legs. Maybe that won’t be a problem, but he will need to figure out the fit.
Taking a Look at Kyler Murray’s NFL Career Thus Far
Since coming into the NFL back in 2019, Murray has shown flashes of superstar ability.
In 87 career games played, the 28-year-old quarterback has completed 67.1 percent of his pass attempts for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions. He has also picked up 3,193 yards and 32 touchdowns on 532 career carries.
Murray has had some issues staying healthy. He only played in five games last season and eight back in 2023. The Vikings are going to need him on the field.
There are obvious reasons to be excited about the talent Murray brings to the field. However, his health and fit are concerns with monitoring as the 2026 season draws closer.
