While the Minnesota Vikings spent Wednesday night trying to secure Kyler Murray as their next starting quarterback, the team was simultaneously working with the Philadelphia Eagles to offload edge-rusher Jonathan Greenard.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported via social media that the two sides continue serious discussions after the Eagles watched Jaelan Phillips depart earlier in free agency for a lucrative deal from the Carolina Panthers.

“The Eagles continue to inquire about the Vikings’ Jonathan Greenard and remain in contact with his agent about a potential extension if a deal were to be struck, sources say,” Russini wrote on X. “Philly is also keeping tabs on the free agent pass rush market after missing out on Trey Hendrickson.”

Jonathan Greenard Looking for Raise and/or Contract Extension With Next Team

Greenard requested a raise on his four-year, $76 million contract earlier this offseason, at which point Minnesota began taking calls on the pass-rusher who will play the upcoming campaign, his seventh in the league, at the age of 29.

“Vikings are now open to trading Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, per sources,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last week. “They would like to keep Greenard, but they also have salary cap issues they’re working through that have led to these trade conversations.”

Schefter’s ESPN colleague Jeremy Fowler followed that report with news that Minnesota is seeking a Day 2 draft pick in return for Greenard, which means either a second-rounder or a third-round selection. Philadelphia currently holds the rights to pick No. 54 in Round 2 and pick Nos. 68 and 98 in Round 3.

Greenard joined the Vikings for the 2024 campaign and put up 22 quarterback hits, 18 tackles for loss and 12 sacks, earning the first (and only) Pro-Bowl nod of his NFL career to this point.

He battled injury in 2025, sitting out five games due to season-ending shoulder surgery. Greenard finished the campaign with 10 tackles for loss and three sacks, but still tallied 47 QB pressures despite all that missed time.

Greenard is a complete defender, with Pro Football Focus ranking him 12th against the run and the 18th-best pass-rusher out of 115 edge defenders who saw enough snaps to qualify in 2025.

Vikings Reportedly Met With Kyler Murray in Minnesota Wednesday Night

While communicating with Philadelphia about Greenard, Vikings brass was reportedly planning for a meeting with Murray in Minnesota on Wednesday night.

“I’m hearing that Kyler Murray is likely flying to Minnesota tonight to meet with the Vikings,” Arizona Cardinals reporter Kyle Odegard posted to X.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier in the day that Minnesota is the clear favorite to land Murray in free agency after the Cardinals officially released the two-time Pro Bowler on Wednesday afternoon.

“The [Vikings] plan to make a push for Kyler Murray, and [they] are the favorite to land the former No. 1 pick, sources tell me and [TomPelissero],” Rapoport posted to X. “Finally released now by Arizona, Murray will take his time and wants to hear directly from other teams. But Minnesota is the team to beat.”
