Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell Gets Bad News Amid NFL Playoffs

A pattern is becoming clear for the Minnesota Vikings and head coach Kevin O’Connell.

While the Vikings coach has brought stability and a healthy culture to the organization after the fallout of the Mike Zimmer-Rick Spielman regime, one thing has evaded O’Connell.

Playoff success.

Following the Chicago Bears‘ comeback, wild-card round victory over the Green Bay Packers under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, O’Connell is the only NFC North head coach without a playoff win.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has two playoff wins from the 2023 season, when he led the Lions to the NFC Conference championship. Meanwhile, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has three playoff wins, with his most recent coming in 2023.

Last year’s NFL Coach of the Year, O’Connell has a career record of 43-27 and a 61.4% winning percentage with the Vikings. However, the pressure is mounting for O’Connell to get over the proverbial playoff hump after his team has fallen in the first round twice since he was hired in 2022.

He faces a similar dilemma that proved to be the bane of the previous regime.

Vikings QB Concerns Have Lingered Into Kevin O’Connell Era

After third-string quarterback Case Keenum led the Vikings to a conference title game in 2018, the Vikings sought a quarterback who could elevate the offense and complement the league’s No. 1 defense.

What came was Kirk Cousins, who was caught in the crosswinds of an organizational divide on the investment at quarterback. The Vikings did not make it back to the conference title game in the cost-effective early years of Cousins’ deal, and poor drafting led the roster to atrophy and a lack of funds to build through free agency, leading to Spielman and Zimmer being fired in 2022.

The new regime of O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah eventually pivoted off Cousins, striking gold in Sam Darnold with first-round pick J.J. McCarthy sidelined his rookie year in 2024.

O’Connell’s commitment to McCarthy left Darnold to find a long-term deal elsewhere and kept several potential veteran stopgaps away, including Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers.

But after a turbulent year for the offense with McCarthy, the Vikings are now forced to at least explore other options to bolster the quarterback room and bring in competition in McCarthy’s third season.

The Vikings took a dive by moving on from Cousins, whose floor would keep the team playing competitive football into the winter months but ultimately could only deliver one playoff win in six seasons.

However, Minnesota is now facing the reality of betting on a young quarterback and its inevitable road bumps that cap space and roster depth cannot compensate for.

Vikings Facing Vital QB Decision This Offseason

If the Vikings do not make the postseason next year, O’Connell may find himself under the same conditions that led to his landing in Minnesota.

Missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons was the ultimatum for Zimmer and Spielman.

It’s a stretch to say O’Connell is in the hot seat to begin the 2026 season, but if his team looks bound for another year of playing meaningless football late in the season, it wouldn’t be a stretch to consider his future uncertain.

That’s what makes the upcoming decision at quarterback vital this season.

Is it McCarthy’s job to lose? Or will a proven veteran be given a chance to win the job?
