Minnesota Vikings legend Randy Moss‘ reputation precedes him, with his namesake becoming a catchphrase synonymous with his high-flying playmaking pedigree.
The NFL’s equivalent of a poster dunk, “Mossed” became the coveted catchphrase to describe a receiver going over the top of a defender and finishing with a spectacular catch — a nod to the prolific receiver.
Joining ESPN as a broadcaster in 2016, Moss’ segment “You Got Mossed!,” became a must-watch, highlighting the greatest catches in football weekly.
And now, he’s taking ownership of the phrase and his likeness.
This week, Moss announced the end of a lengthy process of acquiring the trademark “You Got Moss’d,” turning it into a brand that will feature its own clothing line.
“Over the years, I’ve learned the importance and power of ownership, which is why it was important for me to take that ownership in my own name and protect the You Got Moss’d brand that’s been built over decades of hard work,” Moss said in a statement released by Boardroom.
Boardroom issued the following statement on Moss’ acquisition.
“The NFL icon has officially trademarked ‘You Got Moss’d,’ securing the phrase for commercial use. The filing was originally submitted in July 2024. The trademark covers items including hats, hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, fishing shirts and vests, gloves, and outdoor footwear — a move that protects the phrase from unauthorized use while positioning Moss to extend his legacy beyond the field.”
Randy Moss Returns to ESPN After Cancer Battle
In December 2024, Moss announced unfortunate personal news that he was battling cancer after fans took notice of a yellow tint to his eyes. He appeared a week later, wearing sunglasses on-set during an ESPN broadcast.
“I’m battling something internally,” Moss said, later revealing he was dealing with bile duct cancer and would take a leave of absence at ESPN.
Moss went on Instagram to provide more details.
“I just wanted y’all to see that I did bounce back, but there’s a lot of people out there that is either battling cancer or has had cancer in their family that people are fighting,” he said. “Things took the turn for the worst … y’all best believe your boy came through.
“I’m nursing myself back,” he added. “Yes, it’s going to be a little tough road with some chemo and some radiation, but like I said, man, I’m good.”
Moss’ battle with cancer led to him launching “Team Moss” apparel with the phrase: “Let’s Moss Cancer.”
Moss returned to ESPN in time for the Super Bowl last year and remains a member of the network’s pregame cast.
