The New England Patriots have had a summer of trying to find common ground with Christian Gonzalez.

With the regular season approaching and no extension in place, one of the Patriots’ top decision-makers gave a fresh perspective on the stalemate.

Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf addressed Gonzalez’s contract situation during his halftime interview with Devin and Jason McCourty in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Each side is trying to do what’s best for them,” Wolf said.

Wolf reiterated that New England views Gonzalez as a major part of its squad and intends to keep negotiating with his representatives.

“We’re going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done,” Wolf said, according to Boston.com’s Kaley Brown.

The comments hardly suggest a breakthrough is imminent.

The contract conversation has become increasingly complicated since training camp opened.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft publicly revealed in July that the franchise had made Gonzalez an offer that would have made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback and the highest-paid player in franchise history, as Boston.com reported.

Gonzalez responded days later by saying he preferred to keep negotiations private.

The situation gained more juice when the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a four-year, $132 million extension with Devon Witherspoon. The deal averages $33 million annually and includes $101 million guaranteed, setting a new benchmark for the cornerback market.

That agreement has obvious relevance in Foxborough.

Gonzalez and Witherspoon were both first-round picks in the 2023 NFL draft, and Gonzalez is now positioned to potentially surpass the latest market-setting number.

New England’s offer has yet to produce an agreement, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported around that time that the two sides were not particularly close to completing an extension.

Wolf’s latest comments strike a calmer tone.

The Patriots still want their star cornerback around, and the front office doesn’t appear ready to abandon its effort to reach a long-term deal.

Gonzalez Has Leverage to Wait

There’s also little forcing Christian Gonzalez to accept a deal that falls short of what he believes his value will become.

The Patriots exercised Gonzalez’s fifth-year option this offseason, keeping him under team control through 2027. That option is worth $18.119 million, giving both sides contractual runway even if an extension remains unfinished entering the season.

The sticking point could involve where the cornerback market lands in the future rather than where it currently sits.

As we previously wrote, NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran said Gonzalez is looking ahead to the 2027 market and doesn’t want a record-setting extension signed now to become outdated within months.

Curran projected another elite cornerback could command $34 million to $35 million per season as the salary cap continues to rise.

That helps explain why topping the current market may not automatically settle the disagreement.

Luckily, Gonzalez also spent most of training camp practicing while the negotiations played out. He participated in New England’s first 13 on-field practices before an injury sidelined him earlier this month, separating his recent absence from the contract discussions.

Wolf’s comments Saturday didn’t put a deadline on the process or indicate that an agreement is close.

They did remove any uncertainty over New England’s intentions.
