Pats Named Potential Landing Spot For Recently Released Two-Time Pro Bowler

For the first time since the 2017 season, the New England Patriots have a record of 13 wins or better.

Drake Maye is playing at an MVP-level and has become the franchise quarterback looking to help the Patriots return to their Super Bowl-winning ways.

But a shout also has to go to the New England defense, which has been playing at an underrated level without any big names on that side of the ball. The Patriots D has been averaging 19.4 points per game this season, which is the fifth-fewest in the NFL.

While things are going well, the Pats could make another addition to help lower the statistics.

Pats Named Suitor For Former First-Team All-Pro

For the first time in his career, Christian Gonzalez has been named a Pro Bowler despite missing the first four games of the season.

Gonzalez was one of two players for the Patriots to receive the honor (Drake Maye). But New England could add another Pro Bowl defensive back after their release.

Trevon Diggs has released by the Dallas Cowboys and could make his way to Foxborough if he is unclaimed on the waiver wire.

Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports names the Patriots has landing spot for the recently released Diggs.

“If we want to talk about teams with ties to Diggs, there arguably is none stronger than the Patriots, who currently have his brother, wideout Stefon Diggs, on the roster as a focal point of their offense,” Sullivan wrote.

“That said, the Patriots have Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis as their top two corners at the moment, but are still lacking a bit of depth in that area of their defense, so there’s a roster-based need for Diggs on top of the simple family connection.”

The first three seasons for Diggs were the best of his career. He was a two-time Pro Bowler, a first-team All-Pro and recorded 17 interceptions (including 11 in one season).

Unfortunately for Diggs, the last three seasons haven’t been the best for him. He has only played in 21 games and just logged 3 INTs.

While injuries play a major factor in the defender’s regressions over the last few years, a new change of scenery could do him a favor and help him develop back into the player he was.

Trevon Diggs Contract

The biggest concern the Patriots will have about going after Trevon Diggs is his contract and whether they would want the player for the end of this season.

Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract with the Cowboys and is just finishing up year two. If the Patriots were to claim him, just to not deal with the worry about his market value if he clears waivers, they would have to take on the rest of his deal.

According to Over the Cap, the Patriots will have around $48 million in cap space for next season, which will fall if Diggs is claimed by the Patriots.

But adding a player of his caliber to a defensive-minded head coach who can get the best of his players could be the right fit for Trevon.
