New England Patriots free agent wide receiver signing Romeo Doubs shared his first impression of quarterback Drake Maye.

Shortly after the New England Patriots decided to move on from Stefon Diggs, they replaced their star wide receiver by signing free agent Romeo Doubs. Previously with the Green Bay Packers, the Patriots are hoping he can quickly become a new favorite target of quarterback Drake Maye.

Doubs is now in the team facilities and has begun to work with Maye this offseason. That’s led to an excellent first impression for the pair.

“Very poised guy, very energetic… I mean he’s an amazing dude, amazing quarterback in this league,” Doubs said. “Like I said, I just look forward to just continuously just building and understanding this offense just one day at a time.”

Maye did an excellent job showing off that energy and poise in 2025. That led to a runner-up finish for the MVP and a Super Bowl appearance. Now, Doubs is hoping to be a key piece in the Patriots getting back to the NFL’s biggest stage by becoming one of Maye’s top weapons.

A season ago, Doubs had 85 receptions for 724 yards and 6 touchdowns. That would have been tied with Diggs for most on the team in receptions, third on the team in receiving yards, and tied for second in touchdowns.

The addition of Romeo Doubs this offseason has largely been overshadowed. That’s not a surprise, though. After all, the New England Patriots have consistently been involved in rumors surrounding the addition of A.J. Brown.

Doubs has heard those rumors. Now, he’s finally opened up about the possibility that Brown joins the Patriots.

“I was true to my word when I came here that there is no number one guy in this offense. So, whatever it is I have to do, whether it’s playing into the strength more or playing on the backside every here and now, or even having (revolving roles), which I’m really familiar with because I’ve done it in Green Bay also,” Doubs said.

“I’m open to all roles. That’s just part of this league. You know, the more you can do, the more you can do for the team, the more you show for yourself, just things of that nature.”

In all of that, Doubs did want to make one thing very clear. He has plenty of respect for Brown.

“I have a ton of respect for him,” Doubs said. “I mean, he’s been a dude in this league for quite a long time. I understand that when he first got in the league, Coach Vrabel was his coach. So again, I understand there are a lot of rumors going around. If he’s here, I’d love to have him here, and if he isn’t here, I’m still going to wish him the best because he’s one of the guys this week. best in this league.”

ESPN Graded the Patriots for Signing Doubs

Prior to the NFL Draft, ESPN’s Seth Walder took some time to look at a few of the major signings and hand out grades for them. That included Doubs and the Patriots, where New England earned a “B+” rating.

“Doubs is not a No. 1 receiver, but he is solid and probably a little underrated. He averaged 1.9 yards per route run last season, which ranked in the 64th percentile among wide receivers with at least 300 routes run. That was a career high, but he was at 1.8 the year prior,” Walder wrote. “He can get depth, averaging 12.7 air yards per target. In Green Bay, he ran post routes, go routes, medium crossers and deep outs more than most receivers.”

It’s a pretty good grade overall on the signing. Of course, if Maye and Doubs develop a great connection, particularly on those deep routes, then there’s no reason why he can’t surpass that rating.
