Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was requested to interview for a second head coaching gig this hiring cycle.
The Buffalo Bills, after firing Sean McDermott on Monday, are looking to speak with their former offensive coordinator about their vacant head coaching position.
After first interviewing with the Tennessee Titans for their vacant head coach position, Daboll will get another look up in Buffalo, where he still has a strong relationship with quarterback Josh Allen.
Daboll has interviewed for several offensive coordinator positions around the league, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers.
However, it appears the former Coach of the Year has decided the Bills’ job is his No. 1 priority, with an offensive coordinator position being his backup plan, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
Brian Daboll Wants the Bills’ Job, Titans Named as Backup Plan
While the former New York Giants coach interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles‘ vacant offensive coordinator position, the “understanding” is that his main interests lie with the Buffalo Bills.
If he can’t land it, Russini reported that Daboll intends to join newly hired Robert Saleh as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
“The Eagles are conducting their offensive coordinator search with the understanding that Brian Daboll wants the Bills’ head coaching job. If he doesn’t land it, Daboll is expected to wind up in Tennessee as the offensive coordinator for Cam Ward and the Titans, per sources,” wrote Russini in a post on X.
It’s fairly telling that Daboll would prefer the Titans’ job over the Eagles, considering they’re just one year removed from winning a Super Bowl.
Despite how much talent they have on offense, the former Giants coach would rather work with an up-and-coming youngster in Cam Ward, who is still raw but showed tantalizing ability throughout his rookie season.
Daboll likely wants to prove his best asset is his acuity for working with young quarterbacks and developing them into great players, such as Allen and his short work with Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Despite attaching himself to Saleh, another failed New York head coach, Daboll is likely excited at the opportunity for another success story in Ward.
Will Brian Daboll’s Relationship With Josh Allen Land Him the Bills’ Job?
The Buffalo Bills’ head coach position is arguably the most attractive opening across the NFL landscape right now, given that they have an MVP quarterback in Allen and a roster that just came within inches of the AFC Championship game.
It also doesn’t hurt that Daboll’s relationship with Allen is a special one, and if the quarterback has any say in the decision, he may tip the scales in his former offensive coordinator’s favor.
“[Our relationship] started because of football, but…we have similar, I’d say personalities and we developed a strong relationship,” Daboll said about Allen after taking the New York Giants job in 2023, via ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg.
“That won’t change, wherever I’m at, whatever I’m doing, on my side of it, certainly talk to him, we don’t just talk about football because you, again, you get to be around someone for as long as you are for four years, you’re naturally gonna have a relationship. So, it’s, again, he’s a great friend, I’ll just say that.”
It’s obvious why Daboll’s first choice is reuniting with one of his closest friends up in Buffalo.
We’ll see just how much the newly promoted Head of Football Operations, Brandon Beane, values that relationship when he decides who the next head coach will be.
