New York Giants offensive tackle James Hudson drew four penalties on one possession against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. As a result, the Giants’ coaching staff benched him, and he seemed visibly frustrated when he returned to the sideline.

Hudson committed two unnecessary roughness penalties and two false starts during the sequence. He was seen voicing his frustration at head coach Brian Daboll and others on the sideline, a moment captured on the FOX broadcast. Per “NFL on CBS,” Hudson is the first player since 2000 to be flagged four times on a single drive.

James Hudson Went on a Historic Run of Penalties

All four penalties came within a two-minute span, from 8:29 to 6:40 in the first quarter. The first, an unnecessary roughness call, wiped out a 10-yard run by running back Cam Skattebo and pushed the Giants back to the Dallas 43-yard line.

On Skattebo’s run, Hudson appeared to strike Cowboys defensive end James Houston in the helmet after slipping out of his stance. From that point, the penalties began to stack up.

Giants quarterback Russell Wilson found Wan’Dale Robinson for an 11-yard gain on the next snap, but Hudson’s mistakes quickly derailed the drive. He drew a second unnecessary roughness flag after a 50-yard completion from Wilson to Robinson, then committed false starts on two of the following three plays.

Giants lost to the Cowboys 40-37 in overtime. New York finished the game with 14 penalties for 160 yards. Hudson alone was responsible for four penalties that cost the Giants 50 yards.

Giants-Cowboys Had a Lot of Offense

In what many anticipated would be a blowout, the Giants and Cowboys delivered a thrilling back-and-forth battle that went down to the final moments of overtime. If not for the 26 combined penalties, the matchup might have been remembered as an instant classic.

Trailing 13-10 at halftime, the Cowboys grabbed the lead in the third quarter on Javonte Williams’ 30-yard touchdown run. The Giants answered early in the fourth, as Graham Gano’s third field goal evened the score at 16-16.

Miles Sanders capped an 85-yard march with a 4-yard touchdown run, but the Giants responded with scores from Skattebo and Robinson.

With 52 seconds left, Dak Prescott connected with George Pickens on a 6-yard touchdown to put Dallas ahead 34-30. Wilson, however, needed just three plays to reclaim the lead, hitting Malik Nabers on a 48-yard bomb for a 37-34 Giants edge with 25 seconds remaining.

Prescott then drove the Cowboys into position for Brandon Aubrey’s booming game-tying field goal at the buzzer, forcing overtime.

The Giants and Cowboys traded blows in overtime until a desperate heave from Russell Wilson was intercepted by Donovan Wilson, handing the ball back to Prescott — who once again found a way to beat the Giants. Prescott has a career record of 14-2 against the NFC East rival.

A chip-shot walk-off field goal from Aubrey sealed the outcome.

Prescott and Wilson delivered standout performances. Prescott was 38-for-52, throwing for 361 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Wilson, on the other hand, completed 30 of 41 passes for 450 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Rookie Jaxson Dart made his NFL debut on Sunday, handing the ball off to Skattebo.
