Aaron Glenn’s tenure as the head coach of the New York Jets probably didn’t start off the way he’d hoped. Winning just three games throughout the 2025-26 NFL season, Glenn led his squad to unfortunate history. The former defensive coordinator turned head coach watched his Jets become the first team in NFL history to go an entire regular-season without having an interception.
The former standout defensive player himself, for these same Jets, probably never envisioned his introduction to head coaching playing out quite the way it did. The offensive side of the ball wasn’t much better either, with his leading wide receiver posting just 395 receiving yards (Garrett Wilson).
And while the Jets quarterback position over the past few decades has been a revolving door, that also hasn’t made it any easier on the players or coaches on the roster year-over-year. On top of that, the QB position for the upcoming season has made a full circle back to a former Jets player. Geno Smith is the presumed starting QB for the Jets this year.
Aaron Glenn Reveals Feelings on Geno Smith’s QB Play
While this might be cause for concern for fans, oddsmakers, and just about everyone in the states of New York and New Jersey, Mr. Glenn doesn’t seem too worried about it. In fact, Glenn has done nothing but praise his QB ever since Smith signed a one-year, $3.3 million with the team. And Glenn did just that, once again, while speaking to reporters on Thursday.
“Guys have confidence that when the routes are stretched down the field, he’s going to let it rip. For guys like Garrett (Wilson), guys like AD (Adonai Mitchell), guys like Coop (Omar Cooper Jr.), ya know, Isaiah (Williams). All those guys, they all feel like they have a chance that the ball is coming to them because he does a good job of spreading the ball around. Even our tight ends. Everybody had their hands on the ball, even our backs. And when you have a quarterback who’s going to dish the ball that way, you’re always alert to the ball. And he does a really good job of that. The leadership number one, and then, man, you always have to be ready because the ball could be coming to you at anytime,” Glenn said.
Glenn could actually feel the way he expressed his thoughts to reporters on Thursday. And as the head coach of the Jets, he likely should only be spreading positivity about his players (publicly). However, the reality of Smith returning to the helm at QB for the Jets doesn’t project for a lot of winning this season.
Geno Smith Prepares For Second Stint With Jets
After spending the first four years of his career with the Jets, Smith makes his return to the organization that drafted him No. 39 overall in 2013. Smith will transition from the Las Vegas Raiders where he started 15 games last season. He threw a league worst 17 INTs.
Again, the head coach of the Jets might feel good about the place his QB is in ahead of the season, as a passer and a leader, however, the oddsmakers appear to have a different opinion. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Jets over-under for wins this season is just 5.5.
