The New York Jets once again rolled out their young quarterback tandem in Saturday night’s loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie QB Brady Cook got the start while NFL hopeful Adrian Martinez played the second half.
Neither quarterback was able to really get the offense going. Cook was given one full half of football, and nearly 20 pass attempts, and was unable to surpass 100 yards through the air. Martinez had ample opportunity as well, but was again unable to hit this mark, posting a passer rating of 39.6.
In a night where the team was looking for one player to steal the job, it appears as though they both might have lost it.
“There was some doubt about Taylor’s availability for Week 1, but Glenn said late Friday night that he’s “confident” his backup will be ready. Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery in early August. Adrian Martinez and/or Brady Cook will stick on the practice squad,” wrote Jets insider Rich Cimini in his final roster projection this morning.
However, how confident would Jets fans be knowing they are one snap away from potentially rolling out a 36-year-old starting quarterback weeks off knee surgery?
‘Might Be Better Off Looking For A Veteran’
For the die hard Jets fan watching the preseason finale last night, it would be hard to walk away with an overwhelming sense of optimism in the ability of the two young gunslingers. The same theory applies with keeping one of these guys around, how comfortable would you really be with them running the team’s offense?
It is for that reason that writer Andy Vasquez of NJ.com says the Jets might want to shop around.
What if Tyrod Taylor isn’t ready for the start of the regular season after getting his knee scoped earlier this month? Would Jets fans be comfortable with either Cook or Martinez being one play away from being the quarterback?” Vasquez asks. The Jets might be better off looking for a veteran out there with some NFL game experience to carry on the practice squad as their No. 3 quarterback.”
Vasquez was so unimpressed that he doesn’t even feel as though either one of the young guns had earned a developmental spot on the practice squad.
Both Brady Cook, who started the first half of this game, and Adrian Martinez, who played the second half, have been solid camp arms for the Jets and by all accounts, good teammates. But after watching this game it’s fair to wonder if it makes sense to keep either around on the practice squad,” Vasquez proclaims.
Get Carson Wentz On The Phone
Suoer Bowl champion Carson Wentz still doesn’t have a team. The once near MVP is still homeless heading into the 2025 season after not resigning to be the backup of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Several Jets fans have called for Wentz to take a trip to East Rutherford, but after head coach Aaron Gelnn broke the news that Tyrod Taylor was rehabbing a knee surgery, it makes all the more sense to get the vet in town.
He has not started a meaningful game in two years, and hopefully he wouldn’t have to. But when push comes to shove, it’s nice to have a player you know can run an NFL offense to lean on.
