Insider Reveals Super Bowl Play-Caller Is 2nd Finalist for Jets OC Job: Report

A second finalist has emerged for the vacant New York Jets offensive coordinator role.

NFL Insider Josina Anderson revealed on social media on Sunday, February 1, that Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell “is currently scheduled for an in-person interview with the Jets on Monday, per league source.”

Bevell met with the team last week for a virtual interview.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler revealed on Saturday, January 3,1 that the Jets will “whittle” their initial list of five candidates to a final three. Those three people will have in-person interviews with the team this week. Fowler revealed that veteran coach Greg Roman is another finalist for the Jets’ OC role.

Bevell Has Reached the Mountain Top

The former Wisconsin quarterback has reached the next level of the interview process.

Bevell, 56, earned a Super Bowl ring as the offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 regular season.

He was with Seattle from 2011 through 2017. During that stretch, he “produced some of the most prolific offenses in franchise history along with five straight playoff appearances and two trips to the Super Bowl,” ESPN’s Brady Henderson wrote.

During his 30 years of coaching, Bevell has been an offensive coordinator for 15 of those seasons.

AG Zigs After Zagging

Last week the Jets fired offensive cooridator Tanner Engstrand. He was a first-time play-caller at the NFL level in 2025.

Engstrand quickly landed on his feet, joining the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff as an offensive passing game coordinator over the weekend.

That means Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was immediately on the hunt for a replacement. In the NFL, typically, when you swing one way and it misses, on your next attempt to swing the bat, you go in the opposite direction.

The Jets tried an upside swing with Engstrand. He didn’t have experience, but he had been around a lot of smart people, including offensive wizard Ben Johnson with the Detroit Lions.

That failed miserably. We can debate whether that was all Engstrand’s fault, or whether it was the quarterback situation, or the deteriorating personnel and support system. Regardless of the reason, it didn’t work.

So now AG is opting for experience this time around for his offensive play-caller.

We know who two of the finalists are in Roman and Bevell. Based on the reporting from insiders, the third finalist is believed to be Frank Reich, but that isn’t official.

Based on the other two finalists, it would make sense if Reich were the other guy. He fits the profile of what AG and the Jets are looking for.

He is another experienced guy who has been a coach for a long time. Reich, like Bevell, won a Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator (Philadelphia Eagles in 2017).

Something to Monitor During This Process

There is only one OC job up for grabs, and three people will be fighting for it. That is true.

However, the Jets have multiple vacancies on their offensive coaching staff, including: pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“The Jets are looking for multiple coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Could be a similar situation here. Interview for OC, but hired for something else,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY explained.

So some of these coaches could still join the staff in other roles even if they don’t land the OC gig.
