The New York Jets have finally found their next offensive coordinator.
Gang Green officially announced on social media that they have hired Frank Reich as the new OC.
“Frank has a rare combination of experience, creativity, and calm under pressure,” head coach Aaron Glenn said in a press release. “He’s lived this game from every angle — as a quarterback in this league and as a coach who’s led offenses at the highest level. He is unique in his ability to see the game for what it is right now and adapt when appropriate. Frank understands offense and how to utilize the strengths of players. I am looking forward to how he will help this team have success.”
The Jets Got Their Man
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY revealed on “Jets Final Drive” this week that Reich was expected to join the staff.
Last week, Reich and the team talked about “contract specifics.” He started to reach out to people to put his staff together and told people around him that “it was about a done deal,” according to Hughes.
However, an unexpected snag delayed the process.
The Jets fired offensive cooridator Tanner Engstrand. He was expected to be retained in a lesser role initially, but things changed.
Instead of the Jets hiring Reich in some sort of a senior offensive role, they were now expected to hire him as the OC.
According to the Rooney Rule, if you hire someone in a senior role, you must interview at least one “diverse candidate.” However, for the coordinator interview process, you must speak with at least “two minority and/or female” candidates for the vacancy.
Long story short, that delayed the Jets’ process, but they still ended up with the same guy that they would have hired last week.
Top Social Media Reactions to Jets Reich Hire
“HC Aaron Glenn was looking for a veteran play-caller to take over the offense and be responsible for that side of the ball, and he believes Reich is the guy. Glenn will take more control of the defense and call plays there this season, I’m told,” NFL Insider Jordan Schultz revealed on X previously Twitter.
“Aaron Glenn and Frank Reich were teammates with the Jets in 1996. Reich started seven games at QB, while Glenn started all 16 at CB. The team that year went 1–15,” NFL Insider Ari Meirov posted.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic revealed that Reich was pondering retirement this offseason before the Jets approached him about this role.
“Wasn’t surprised the first time Frank Reich came out of retirement (it was Andrew Luck asking). Definitely surprised this time,” Zak Keefer of The Athletic responded.
“An experienced play caller and a veteran presence to lead the offense,” Dennis Waszak Jr of the Associated Press said.
“I really think the Jets made a responsible decision for the first time in months. Frank Reich is not a glamorous hire, but feels like a step in the progression of being normal NFL franchise. If you hate the hire, betting odds are a clean slate is probably still in store for 2027,” NYJ Matt explained.
