The New York Jets’ season is officially over after an underwhelming year that ended with a 3–14 record. There were few bright spots for a team that struggled throughout the season, and the numbers highlight just how challenging it was for the Jets to find success.

“The Jets trailed by double digits on 53.1% of their offensive plays this season, the highest percentage by any team this century. The only other teams at 50% or higher are the 2011 Buccaneers (50.5%) and the 2000 Cardinals (50.0%),” wrote ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

One of the few silver linings in a lost season for New York was the play of running back Breece Hall.

Hall is set to become a free agent in the offseason, and general manager Darren Mougey made his stance on the star running back’s future with the Jets clear when he spoke to the media on Tuesday.

“Breece is a good player. We want as many good players back as we can. … I met with Breece yesterday and had a lot of good conversations,” Mougey said, according to Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press.

A Look Back On Hall’s Season

Although the Jets overall team performance was very poor, Hall stood out and had a statement season, which will likely earn him a nice pay day in the offseason.

The former Iowa State product rushed for 1,065 yards during the 2025 season, becoming the first Jet to rush for 1,000 yards since Chris Ivory ran for 1,070 in 2015.

Hall once again showed that he is not only effective in the run game, but also a major weapon in the passing attack.

The dual-threat running back totaled 350 receiving yards in 2025, which ranked third on the Jets in receiving yards, trailing only Garrett Wilson (395) and Mason Taylor (369), according to ESPN.

There is no doubt New York would have a significant void to fill if Hall does not return for the 2026 season. Along with Garrett Wilson, Hall has been the centerpiece of the Jets’ offense, and losing one of the team’s best players is never easy. That makes it especially interesting to see how the situation with Hall unfolds this offseason.

It remains unclear whether Hall wants to return to New York as he enters his fifth season, especially with the Jets headed towards another rebuild. However, if Hall does return, he would be a valuable weapon in the new-look 2026 offense and a major asset for whoever lines up at quarterback next season.

If Breece Hall Walks, What’s Next for the Jets?

If both sides want to reunite, the Jets should have little trouble re-signing their star running back, as the team has one of the highest projected cap spaces in the NFL, estimated at $95,802,300, according to Spotrac.

On the other hand, if Hall signs with another team, the Jets would need to find a replacement. Notable running backs expected to be free agents this offseason include Javonte Williams (Dallas), Rico Dowdle (Carolina), and Kenneth Walker III (Seattle), among others.

If Hall does not re-sign, the Jets might not pursue a free agent at all, as they already have two young running backs on the roster, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, both of whom have shown signs of developing into quality players.
