New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn provided an emphatic answer on Justin Fields’ job security as the starting quarterback.
“If he is cleared, he is the starter,” Glenn told the media during his availability on Thursday, September 25.
During a conversation with the media on Monday, September 22, there was some back-and-forth about the quarterback situation that raised eyebrows, but Glenn cleared that up on Thursday with a clear message that Fields is his guy.
Coach Glenn Provides an Encouraging Update on Fields
“Justin will be practicing, but he is still going through the protocol alright, so we have to make sure that is clear, and we’ll be fine, but he is practicing today,” Glenn revealed during his media availability.
It is a non-contact practice for Fields.
“So again, he still has to go through the whole protocol before he is totally cleared, but I like where he is at,” Glenn added.
Tyrod Taylor Is Once Again the Jets Break the Glass Emergency QB
Fields suffered a concussion during the Week 2 blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills. He missed the Week 3 road trip against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his place, the Jets turned to Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor was 26-of-36 for 197 passing yards, threw two touchdown passes, and one pick-six. He also contributed eight carries for 48 rushing yards. Taylor was strip-sacked, which created another turnover for the Bucs defense.
The 36-year-old veteran displayed toughness, but lacked the same mobility that Fields brings to the table.
Other Jets Injury Updates Ahead of Week 4
Coach Glenn revealed that pass rusher Jermaine Johnson is week-to-week with his ankle injury. The same was said for newly acquired cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr, who is also dealing with an ankle issue.
Several players will return to practice for the green and white: wide receiver Josh Reynolds, safety Tony Adams, defensive tackle Jay Tufele, and running back and return specialist Kene Nwangwu, Glenn told the media via ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Do-or-Die Game for the Jets on Monday Night Football
I’m not sure if two 0-3 AFC East rivals competing against each other is what ESPN execs had in mind before the season for their Week 4 Monday Night Football game, but here we are.
Both sides are seeking their first victory of the season.
Miami head coach Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat. Coach Glenn is attempting to start a new era on 1 Jets Drive.
Since 2016, Miami has dominated the rivalry. The Dolphins have won 14 of the last 18 contests during that span against the Jets.
Gang Green won the most recent contest against the fish. It ended up being Aaron Rodgers’ final swan song with the Jets in Week 18, winning 32-20.
