New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn isn’t going anywhere. However, he is expected to make several changes to his coaching staff.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic confirmed that there will be changes to the staff: “Quarterbacks coach Charles London, defensive line coach Eric Washington, and linebackers coach Aaron Curry are names to watch.”
Head coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo will both return to the team in 2026. Rosenblatt says offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand will “likely” return.
Some of the Changes We Could See
NFL Network Insider Judy Battista said on Sunday, January 4, to “expect staff changes” from Coach Glenn.
“Part of that will be assessing if the right offensive structure is in place, and that will be evaluated. Would the Jets make significant changes to the offensive staff this soon after Glenn fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks? To me, that is the sort of question to consider. And the plan is for Glenn to be in place in 2026 to answer it,” NFL Insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote.
“(As it stands now, I think it’ll mean changes around OC Tanner Engstrand, with perhaps some more quarterbacking infrastructure, rather than replacing him.),” Breer added.
Insider Provides More Details on the Key London Decision
“I have the same concerns you have [about Charles London]. I don’t think there is an infrastructure set up to develop a young quarterback, if they draft a QB. It’s hard to know how good Tanner Engstrand is. The numbers are terrible this year, but it’s the same thing that applies to him that applies to Aaron Glenn. They have been playing an undrafted free agent … I mean, how much can you really blame on Engstrand?” ESPN’s Rich Cimini told me on “Boy Green Daily.”
London is a former college running back turned longtime running backs coach. In 2021, out of nowhere, he just became a quarterbacks coach. He has held that title for five years with four teams.
“Charles London is not really a quarterback coach per se. I do think Aaron Glenn needs to address that. They have Scott Turner, a former coordinator on the staff, but if you’re the Jets, I think you have to prioritize finding more of a quarterback guy to come in. Quarterback coaches are normally younger-type guys who are on the way up. So you really have to find someone of that ilk. It’s the coordinator who is really the important position. Do you trust your coordinator to develop a quarterback? So I think that is what Aaron Glenn has to ask himself,” Cimini told me on the podcast.
During the 2021 offseason, then-Jets head coach Robert Saleh hired Greg Knapp. Knapp was a former player in the league and a longtime coach who had worked with a lot of successful quarterbacks.
He was supposed to be the glue for a younger Jets offensive coaching staff. Unfortunately, before training camp, he tragically passed away from a cycling accident. The Jets never filled that void on the staff, and they’re still seeking that type of person in 2026.
The Jets need to add someone who has a track record of successfully developing young quarterbacks.
